Hi All,

I'm a bit confused, so I'm hoping you can help.

I just bought a new little river boat, for use on the Thames.

When the boat was handed over to me, there was a bill of sale included, however this states that the title isn't transferred until I register it with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

I've paid for it, the boat is mine, so what's all this title nonsense? It looks like they want ~£150 to "register" it, and I'd get some certificate.

The boat isn't seagoing. I'm I fine to just not bother?

Cheers,
Andy

If the boat is registered on part 1 then you pay for another 5 years when you register the transfer.

Small boats that don’t have finance on are usually part 3

Given part 1 is proof of title if you don’t renew it I would ensure is is removed from the register as if you just leave it the prior owner will be the registered owner

That’s good advice if it is registered, but I very much doubt a small river-boat would be. I think the standard Bill of Sale form has some wording about Part 1, but that doesn’t imply that the boat is on it.

Andy, unless there’s any paperwork suggesting that the boat is either on the Part 1 register or the Small Ships Register, I think you can ignore this.

From what he was saying it took it that is was on part 1.

I do agree it is unusual - but if it is someone probably wanted finance on it long ago

Does it have an ssr number on the back ?

Thanks for the replies all.

It's a brand new boat, so I don't believe it's registered. There's no SSR number on it, I stuck the boat name (for the EA) on it myself. No finance involved.

So, hopefully Pete is right, and I can ignore it. I paid for it in full, and have the receipts etc.

Cheers,
Andy
