Cheap Flag antifouling again on the Marinestore website.
24 quid for 2.5 litres

Just dont be tempted by the copperquick, it is not well thought of.

I used this last year but not impressed, however it's possible we are all a bit mean with the A/F application so I will put it on thicker this year and see.

Well I wasn't mean in putting on 5 coats of Flag Copperquick last year and neither were the barnacles or weed in attaching to it. Scrubbed off in September and came out again in December still with a mass of barnacles and weed each time. Emailed Flag and was told they couldn't get the formulation right. I was thinking of pursuing the money I spent on materials as they were not interested in a refund but don't want the hassle.

This year I have put a high quality eroding antifoul on but it is definitely not Flag. I wouldn't touch their products if they have the gall to put a bad product like flag Copperquick on the market.

Put on what I thought was a good thick coat of Flag ordinary cruiser stuff and launched at Easter but early June had so much growth we abandoned a trip to Ostende, boat speed down by 1.5 kn.There was a recent thread on Jotun A/F,I may look that up before I decide.Probably scrub off now(been in all winter this time)and scrub again end of May and apply A/F then so it's fresh then for the summer cruise.easy enough on my bilge keeler.

John,
I remember when Copperquick made its global debut in the yard at Burnham Yacht harbour, and was applied to Inn Spirit as a burnishing racing fouling for frequent scrubs. My understanding was that it was not suitable for cruising antifouling.
It was still a prototype product then, and has not been widely taken up, as its performance wasnt up to scratch.
If you wish to remonstrate in person, the MD of Flag lives on one of the houseboats in Burnham. He even has his own pontoon, so you can sail right up to him.
I must say that I have had some very positive conversations of a technical nature with him over the years (infrequent), and I found him to be receptive.

For balance, I used Flag (Vin Ordinaire) last August just before Ramsgate week, 1 coat on a tide, and it has been as good as I could expect, as we were able to motor at over 5 knots last weekend, with no scrubs since application.

As I have publicly stated before, I think that antifoul should be chosen purely on its colour to complement your vessel, rathwer than as a serious repellent. I would use Micron Extra, but it rubs off so quickly on anything taking the ground regularly.

This year, I have Flag Performance Extra (cheap at the last Marinestore giveaway) in a nice shade of Jeanneau Boot Top Blue. We shall see, but I expect to fall short of my low expectations.

in our forth year with the flag performance extra, I do not do mid season scrubs as i stay in all year apart from 2 weeks in July where everything is done.
The only thing Arts bottom is slim and one or two barnies on the bottom of the keel where she keeps dipping in the mud. They always comment in the Yard (fambridge) how clean she stays

So this year in July it will be another two coats of the same

Jim,
I must admit that I was primarily after a hard antifouling when I applied Flag Copperquick. I found that on an Atlantic crossing the abrading antifouling would wear off with so much water passing over the hull. I also went for the copper on the basis that if I could put on five coats for four times the price of my normal premium antifouling and it lasted 4 times as long that was a fair investment. My annoyance with Flag products largely stems from the fact that I feel they are misrepresenting their products as being something they are not.

In terms of getting the antifouling to match your colour scheme. I'm seriously considering painting the bottom with emulsion and getting a Voodoo Priestess to come down and say a few words. I think that will be far more effective than the black magic put out by the paint manufacturers. The main problem I have with the Voodoo Priestess is whether she should bless the boat below the waterline or curse the barnacles and the weed. Perhaps for a special price she would do both.

Anyone know a Voodoo Priestess on the East Coast, South Essex preferably? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think if you look in the small adds in th back of the papers you may find what your looking for, failing that telephone boxes also have adverts.

However tred with caution or its likely your whole life will be cursed /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Why dont you use your emulsion idea, with a couple of bottles of Montezuma's revenge chilli powder added and finished with a liberal dosing of 'round up' weedkiller as recomended on another forum, probably cost you about a tenner all up and probably just as effective as the other products mentioned.

Tried the Chili a few years ago mixed in with normal high performance abrading antifoul. It didn't work any better but did make the antifoul more brittle. Haven't considered 'roundup' before surprisingly as it is one of my wife's favourite products.
