Hello all
I’ve just bought an old 1980s mariner 15 hp 2 stroke 684c that has had little use and only then in freashwater so in good condition. I understand it’s practically a Yamaha in terms of outboard parts being put together. I have no experience with Yamaha or mariner/mercury and these old gems but wish to carry out maintenance and checks etc before it hits the water next spring on an equally old 4m Avon sib.

What manual should I use/ buy that covers this engine and also any tips or references online or from experience should Icarry out in order to preserve this tame beast and get the most out of its capabilities.
Thanks there for now.

You don't quote the serial number which would help identify what you have and pin-point the year or say if it was made in US, Belgium or Japan
However
Year identifier and Owners manuals can be found at Brunswick Marine in EMEA Download Center - Download Center but they seem to have dropped many of the older manuals from the site.

If it pre-dates 1984 forget Yamaha for any support although you should be able to get most spares from a Mariner agent.
I find Outboards-Direct ( aka Oakley Marine ) very good for parts and they are Mariner agents

Exploded parts diagrams and lists at Boats.net: Outboard Motors, OEM Marine Parts, Boats for Sale ( look under Mercury) although you might find it a bit difficult to match your model to these

There is a Seloc workshop manual which covers all 2 - 60 hp , 2 stroke Mariners from 1977 to 89 but if you can find n OEM manual it will cover far fewer models and be miles better

With a new to you engine check the gearcase oil for signs of water intrusion and unless you know it has been changed recently renew the water pump impeller.

That's all sound advice. Thanks
I found the ID badge details as follows:

Mariner 15m
684 cs 015284

Next badge:
Made in Japan
Mariner international Corp
Fond Du Lac, Wis, USA

If there's a quick i.d. you know of on this that would be a great start.

That seems to make it a 1981 model but I don't know the significance of "cs"

Not many parts available by the look of it
