Hi All
I have recently bought a mariner/yamaha 2stroke 8hp outboard 1980 approx . it runs very well. I wish to give it a service impeller plugs etc ,If anyone know of a good online supplier of parts please let me know.
Thanks

Change the gear oil. If you have any outboard gear oil use it otherwise for something this old use an ordinary EP90 oil. If the old oil contains water or is milky it indicates that the seals have gone but changing them could prove to be impossible.

The pump impeller really ought to be changed .... nobody would consider running their inboard with a 30 year old impeller in the water pump but as TQA notes undoing the bolts could prove to be impossible. They are easily broken, so be warned.

OTOH of course if its been regularly serviced and the bolts all greased on reassembly you may be lucky in being able to unbolt what it is necessary to unbolt.

If it has been regularly serviced and the bolts are nicely greased it will most likely have a recent impeller.

Leave it alone. I have seen too many lower units with stripped threads and or broken off bolts.

By all means carry a spare impeller if cruising in places where they are not available.

Watch the P stream like a hawk for the first run or two, that is when it will fail, but most don't.

What's the point? If you can't dismantle it.

It is possible that the lower unit will come apart but also possible that you will have stripped threads, bolt heads twisted off, cracked casings etc. But if the impeller goes bad and you are in the boonies then you need the spare if you are going to be able to make the repair.

I carried a spare for my 30+ year old Johnson for years and never needed it.
