I have just purchased a used Mariner 6 hp O/B 2 stroke which starts first time and rons well in a barrel of water. What maintenance should I carry out before using it for fishing at sea this season. Can I do the maintenance myself as I've been Quoted £50 just to look at it? I'm fairly handy.

Is there water coming out of the tell tail? If so that's fine. If not then you'll have to check the impellor. Maybe check that the gear box oil at the bottom of the leg is clean (if milky then it needs to be changed as well as the seals) and that's about it, apart from maybe change the spark plugs.

Pretty simple really.

Personally, I would Change Gear Box Oil & Impellor, that way I would know the "Starting State" of the engine and have piece of mind.
