Mariner 8hp Sailmate won\'t start

Hi. I staretd mynormally reliable Mariner 8hp Sailmate 2-sroke to warm it up and as usual it started easily. After running for about 5 mins it cut out and refused to start again. I took the plugs out to check they weren't fouled, cleaned them and put them back but still no luck. I checked the fuel supply from the tank and that's OK (and the fuel is fresh). I don't have a manual so I'm a bit scared of just taking bits off indiscriminately but I'd be very glad of a few pointers of what to do next. (I don't want to pre-judge any reply but I did notice that I didn't get the strong petrol smell that I've got before on the odd occasion the engine's failed to start after a few pulls - fuel blockage? - where?). Many thanks

Start by checking for a good hot spark at the plugs.

No spark then you have got to be looking at the ignition system.

It cut rather than you stopped it otherwise a faulty stop button would be a suspect.

If you have good sparks then you start looking at the fuel system and carburetor.

Tank vent? Does it appear to prime with the bulb OK? Dirt in carb jets?

The iboats forums http://forums.iboats.com/forumdisplay.php?f=4 are a good place for advice on outboards, but quote the full model details including year if you go there.

If its an owners manual you are in need of then you should be able to download one from the download center at http://www.brunswickmarineemea.com/homepage/welcome

Re: Mariner 8hp Sailmate won\'t start

I once spent an hour trying to start one of these engines - finally noticed I had, without noticing, knocked the switch on the starboard side of the engine to the "off" position. What a fool!

When you remove the spark plug this is often very diagnostic. ie if it is wet oily and smells of petrol then it is most likely it is bad ignition.
If it is dry and grey then you are not getting petrol into the cylinder.

Check for a spark by removing the plug and wiring the body to the engine block to earth it or just lay it on a stable metal part of the engine. Turn over the engine and you should (in shadow) see a spark.
If the engine has electronic ignition (most likelly) then these electronics units can fail. Expensive and only tested by replacement. So that should eb the last step.. good luck olewill
