Mariner 5 cooling

I have just aquired a Mariner 5 two stroke engine of unknown vintage. This is my first first experience of outboards and I am mystifed to see how the water cooling works. The manual (which seems identical in other respects) shows a water inlet above the prop/gearbox area which does not exist on my engine. Neither can I see a water outlet anywhere in the place shown despite the dire warnings about checking that water is being expelled etc.

However there are plenty of fins around the cylinder area so could it be that this is air cooled and I have the wrong manual. Is there such a thing as an air cooled Mariner 5 - I always thought that outboards were water cooled.

I am planning a trip with my trailer sailor next week and hoping to put the engine to good use but concerned about it overheating. Any advice would be much appreciated.

ive a couple of mariner/merc 4+5s,and a water cooled engine dont have fins!!looks very much like an early aircooled job to me!!(engine could be based on the yam 5 aircooled..despite the badges, all small ob.s are generic, with tohatsu making most of the gear..!)

Thanks for those comments. Having taken off some of the cowling its pretty clear now that it is air cooled. Didn't know that Mariner badged Yamaha but the Made in Japan sticker on the side may be a give away.

Cheers - Peter
