MARINER 40HP 1996 HOW MUCH WORTH?

what would you say a mariner 40hp outboard, manual, 1996, supposedly low hours, but with scratches is worth? It is offered at £850. He says it runs really well and I won't be able to fault it?

Theres a lot of this particular outboard around, due to the RNLI using them. £850 sounds about right but it might be worth checking out the prices of the reconditioned Mariner units from the RNLI

Could well be wrong, but don't they pass em on to E P Barruss to sell?

I think its a mistake to rely on the sellers , it runs really well you wont be able to fault it , even if he's a judge !!!!
Can you test it ,you know the only way to test it is to once warmed up open the throttle to see if it achieves maximum revs ( rev counter attached ) either in a test tank or back of a boat .
Apart from that when was the water pump impeller last changed and does it change gear ok .Does it emit smoke e.g. blue smoke and after the test run does it tick over correctly ,do the electrics seem perished .
Sounds like an average price .
