I've got the above 4hp outboard which has always been tricky despite only running got around 15 hrs in 3 yrs. Latest fault is that the recoil won't pull in neutral - it shouldn't pull in F or R. Can anyone advise ?

Not very helpful but check the operation of the interlock between the gear shift and the lock on the flywheel.

The lock should be lifted out of engagement with the flywheel when neutral is selected.

See the vertical rod from the gear lever up to the cord pull? That should move to engage and disengage the nylon pawl at the top when you move the gear lever. Try disengaging the pawl manually and see if the cord pulls. Perhaps the pinch bolt has slipped. If not it's some kind of jam-up in the pull start.

(what other issues have you had. Mine has been grand)

Jammed recoil

Phil thanks, good of you to go to the trouble of sending the pic. I think it must be jammed internally. The pawl is disengaged. The other probs are all gear shift related. Won't go into reverse, jumps out of reverse at high revs. I sail in the N sea and very rarely use the motor as I have a swinging mooring in a bay. However for overnights when weather may change and when family are on board it would be reassuring to have a predictable motor!

On the gearshift issues. Have you checked the gearbox oil? Low level can cause funny things to happen. It needs a decisive shove to engage gear and it is possible to not quite get it completely in gear. It has happened to me now and then and it's just because I haven't pushed the lever far enough.
