Mariner 3.5 Won\'t Idle

Our year old Mariner is running fine but will not idle .. Tonight i have removed the carb and cleaned up the oil that was in the case .. I presume the oil has come from the sump via the breather into the top of the carb .. I have also found two rubber pipes that exit underneath the engine and connect to the top of the carb .. One had oil in it and was in the bottom of the engine rather than fed to the outside .. QUESTION is it the oil that caused the problem .. ? .. What are the pipes for ..

Is it trying to run on last year's fuel perhaps? If so. drain all fuel, refuel with fresh petrol and try again, It is amazing how petrol degenerates over a winter season...

Re: Mariner 3.5 Won\'t Idle

Very probably the oil that's causing the problem.

In any case it sounds as though the slow running jet is blocked. Strip carb and clean.

Always a good idea to use fresh fuel if encountering any problems although it is amazing how well petrol keeps over a winter season.

Be very particular how the engine is carried and stored .... refer to the manual!

Storing upright would be my preference (even my 2 strokes are stored upright)

When stowed on board be careful that it is lying on the correct side and that even when the boat is well heeled its power-head is never lower than the prop.

another vote for slow running jet problems. Of course the problems associated with slow jet difficulties can result in mucky plugs so a clean up and checking the gap is not a silly idea here.
