Hello,

Our very reliable (up until now) Mariner 3.3hp 2 stroke outboard has conked out on us in St Lucia and I can't seem to find a manual for it anywhere online. The manual we have is not a very technical one and we really want one that shows a gearbox diagram as the problem is that it is no longer engaging into forward gear.

Any fixing advice or manual pdf links greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Jess

You can get them on sites such as eBay. Here for example

Thanks, but probably should have specified that a free pdf is more what I'm after. No way of printing here and won't be in one country long enough to have things posted, so digital is the way to go.

If you just want a diagram, you can get it free here - select the appropriate link according to your engine's serial number, then look at the shiftable gearbox section.

If you gently ease the gearbox off the leg, but not all the way off, you will be able to see the rod that moves up and down to change the gear. One rod comes down from the lever at the top. Asecond one comes up from the gear box. There is a kind of pinch clamp holding the two together. If the clamp has come loose or slipped, the lever movement will not get transmitted to the gearbox.

BEWARE

if you pull the gearbox all the way off, you have to simultaneously align the shaft, the gear link rod and the water pipe, which is a pain.

Earlier threads, about Sep 2011, describe the knack for aligning it all and link to the manual on Lakesailor's site.

It is easy to do without the manual so long as you ease the gearbox away from the leg very carefully, and take photo of what it looks like to aid refitting. Then it is just a bit of patient fiddling to get the three bits aligned. You can get about 3cm clearance before the box comes right off.

I have a copy of the Tohatsu manual in .pdf form which I'm given to understand is the same engine only rebadged. PM me if you want me to send you a copy.

Thanks to all

Dear All,

Sorry for slow reply, lots of jobs to get on with while within internet access. Thank you so much to everyone who responded. Thanks to a combination of pdf manuals and your kind and detailed advice we were able to fix the outboard and it's now working again fine.

This is the first time I've asked for help in a fixing problem through the forum and am overwhelmed at how brilliant everyone was so thank you all so much.

Fair winds to you all :)

Re. Your quest for a service manual in pdf form, drop me a private message... I may be able to help you out.

Do you still have access to a Mercury 3.3 manual. I have a similar problem in that the engine runs but moving the the leaver from N to F does nothing. I have checked through the rubber grommet and can see that change rod is connected correctly.
Thank you

My issue was that, though years of no use, the plastic gear handle (or more specifically the 2 O-rings on it) had seized within the engine casing. The only movement was the plastic handle flexing. I believe I eventually freed it with copious hot water, wd40 and some rather crude levering with a screwdriver and pliers through the small inspection hole which I think is located behind the carry handle. That hole also allows access to the plastic cam that connects the gear handle to the top of the change rod that you have spotted behind the rubber grommet.

Does that change rod (as viewed through the grommet) move signficantly when you operate the gear lever? If so, have you tried adjusting the relative position of that change rod with the rod coming up to meet it from the gear box?

In any event, drop me a personal message with your email address.

Well I have to own up and admit my problem was a broken shear pin. Considering this is the most obvious place to look where a prop stops turning I am surprised I missed it.

I had the same problem with my M 3.3 recently. Freed up the gear lever with a good squirt of Wurth Ultra 2040 which is my favourite magic spray ....contains prefer which forms a residual coating on the working parts. very good for wind transducers.
