I hadn't run my Mariner 3.3 two stroke for a couple of years so I got the big plastic bin out filled it with fresh water clamped on the o/b and gave it a spin.
The good news is that it started after three pulls. It ran well even though the petrol/oil mix in the tank was probably four years old.
Pleasantly surprised I put everything away and left the o/b at the back of the garage. This morning I noticed oil on the floor under the o/b.
It appears to be coming from the exhaust outlet. Any suggestions what's wrong ?

I would guess that nothings wrong, unburnt oil has collected in the exhaust and after getting it hot and wet yesterday it's now dribbled down the exhaust and leaked out. If the fuel has been sat there for a few years I would also hazard a guess that the petrol content has evaporated (not all of itr obviously but some of it) thus increasing the oil to petrol ratio making it smoke more than you remember and sending more oil through it than can be burnt, leaving more in the exhaust to dribble out over night.

Treat it to a new spark plug and some fresh fuel with the correct oil mix and see what happens. Whilst your there give it a new impellor and grease all the nipples ;)

Normal for a 2 stroke. Just unburnt oil from the fuel.

My Mariner 2.5 which is the same engine always oozes oil after running, and this is normal.

the smell of a two stroke is the unburnt oil and petrol mixed in the exhaust. There's nothing quite like it. Have you seen how much oil comes out of a seagull after it has been run? Enough to keep an aga going all winter or power a small housing estate :)

No doubt, Tom52, you noticed that the coolant telltale dribble was present when running the engine in the dustbin?I did not notice its absence, and it cost me an impellor, which is not behind the prop if it has a neutral lever. It is further up the leg.I had difficulty shifting the bolts holding the leg together, and the top of one bolt sheared off, thankfully leaving all the threaded portion useable.I shall draw a veil over what happened next, suffice to say it was a satisfactory bodge!PM me if in difficulty.

Thanks chaps. I have been and had another look. It is unburnt two stroke mix (mainly oil). Obvious really.
Paulclan. I am pleased to say I don't have a dribble its a very impressive spurt since I scraped all the deposits from the channels a few years ago and ever since I never run the engine without admiring the flow. One of my more successful diy efforts ! If only they all worked out so well.
BigBang. I promise to give her some TLC. Although the good old two stroke seems to thrive on neglect and abuse.

The Tohatsu 3.5, Mariner and Mercury 3.3s are the same machine.
The Tohatsu 2.5 is the same as Mariner and Mercury 2.2s.

There is one significant difference between big and little brother - the waterpump on the big engines is in stainless, on the small ones in alloy. So the small ones need a thorough fresh-water rinse after use or the waterpump will grow nasty accretions.
The big one also has a dog-clutch, N/D on which the bearings for the control-lever always seem to seize.
