Hi,

Just bought a second-hand Marina 2hp outboard in nice condition. It looks (and I'm sure is) identical to the Yamaha 2hp.

On-line manuals for both engines say... 100:1 fuel/oil mix for the Yamaha but 50:1 for the identical looking Mariner - any suggestions as to which is correct? I know the logic is that more oil can't hurt but as it's pre-mix too much oil will, in effect make the engine run lean in terms of fuel/air also I'm not keen on making any more oily/smelly fumes than necessary!!

Many small two-strokes were sold retail as suitable for 100:1 mix, but for "commercial use" (presumably a hard life) were specified as running on 50:1.

About 15years ago I bought a Yam 2hp in the Caribbean I'm pretty sure the manual that came with it said 50/1 but as you say 100/1 in Europe.I still use that motor(its great)I don't think the engine will notice if you use 50/1.And I don't think your nose will notice a50/1 mix.Or be different go 75/1.

My suspicion is that these engines were designed for 50:1, but stating 100:1 (which they will tolerate) allowed the manufacturer to comply with some regulation or other. So I run my 2hp Suzuki on 50:1 and it seems happy.

When I bought my suzuki 2hp the dealer said "You can run it on 100-1, but if you want to be kind to it and make it last, use 50-1.

I bought a new Yamaha 2HP in Guatemala in 2014 and the manual definitely says 50:1 and I think it may also say this on the engine casing as well

Lovely engine ALWAYS starts first pull
