I have recently purchased a Mariner 2.5 hp outboard, it is probably four or five years old but with very little use.

Unforutnately I don't know anything about outboards and I don’t have a detailed manual with it. There are a couple of queries that I hoped someone might be able to help me with.

1) Are the water inlet points the two small holes on the front of the shaft just above the gear case i.e. where the case meets the shaft (should have taken a picture!!) ?

2) There is a small hole on one side of the gear case, roughly in the middle (top/bottom, left/right) which seems to “leak” oil/petrol I think. Does anyone know what this hole is for or what this might mean ? It is on the opposite side to the oil fill point for the gear case.

Thanks,

Rich

You should be able to download a manual from this website

http://www.brunswickmarineemea.com/

They are the Mecury dealers for Europe and I think a Mariner is just a rebadged Mercury. You might need your Engine Serial number to locate the manual.

But I think there should only be two holes in the gear case and each should be closed off with a bolt. Could one of the bolts be missing?

The water intakes are the holes in the ring immediately ahead of the propellor - just below propellor shaft level.

The oil fill and drain are both on the same side of the gearbox and should be obvious as they should both have bolts in them..

IIRC the other 3 holes are just drains to let the water out of the leg - they all spurt water when you lift the engine out. Perhaps the one that you're concerned about is an exhaust drain contaminated with a little unburnt fuel?

Thanks for the replies I've found the intakes now. I've also found the tell-tale hose which was stuffed up inside the body!! I still can't work out what the other vent hole is on the prop housing but I'll give it a go with the boat now and see how I get on.

Thanks,

Rich.

I have a Mariner 2.5 hp outboard which I have been using for 25 years but it has just started leaking oily substance with a bit of water. It is exactly the hole describer by Rich. What is it for. (It is not mentioned in the Mariner manual). Should it have a plug in it which has fallen out? I am concerned that, as it is underwater, it would let water into the gearbox case.
Does anyone have any info on this? The outboard was running well but I noytice the leak about 14 hours after it had come out of the water.
