Does anyone know of a Marine Radio receiver which can be connected to the Internet. The requirement is for the person answering the radio to be remote from the location of the aerial.

The solution must exist because you can contact Solent Coastguard via an aerial located near Newhaven (if your in the Brighton area), but I must be using the wrong search terms in Google.

Thanks in advance

Nick

Same radio hams do this. It is partially popular in some areas of the states. The radio and antenna are located on a mountainside in a cabin, the radio is remotely operated from the city. Very specific hardware and software required. Very unlikely to be available on a marine VHF.

Not sure of the licensing implications for marine VHF??? One of the conditions of my VHF licence is that I operate the radio only from my boat. How big is your boat???

Unless you are thinking SSB HF, in which case the Ham rig would do it, although probably in breach of the marine licence.....???

They use dedicated phone/data lines between remote antennas and a central control room.

It's old school tech ,pre-internet & quite reliable

I'm not aware of one the only things you can get with a marine SSB, other than voice, are weather faxes and forecasts, marine area forecasts e.g. Caribbean and email via a modem.

However there is a plan for aircraft and ships to get high speed Internet from satellites by phone. No doubt the initial phones will be extremely expensive although that would change if there is mass production. Note: In some areas of the world there is no high speed Internet so plane passengers will have to put up with whatever the speed is below them.

or check out the internet for "software defined radio" transceiver

It could get expensive.. Although if you just search for SDR or Software Defined Radio then it is quite possible to set up remote radio reception via a PC at a remote location.

You mention a receiver......yet talk about answering....Do you mean a transmitter?receiver???? What country are you doing this.???? There are a few ways of doing this however I suspect that they all break a few laws! :)

Thank you for your advice, as I suspected it was a matter of the right Google search term. In case anyone does a search on the threads in the future the right search term is Radio over IP or ROIP.

Starting to talk to suppliers one of which is ICS Electronics (icselectronics.co.uk) I think ICOM may have a solution as well.
