Can anyone explain whats the difference between Marine Ply and ordinary external grade ply, besides one's designed for use in a continually wet environment.
Also - anyone know where I can buy 1 sheet in the North Essex area????

The main difference between marine and WBP ply is with the veneers. Marine ply has better quality veneers throughout. It is also made to a more stringent specification. I have used WBP with good quality facing veneers for interiors without problems.

I have had to purchase the material through a company in Dorset and I live in the NE of England!

The company is KJ Howells and the tel no is 01202 665724

I aggree with that. The main difference apart from the quality of the timber itself, being the (theoretical) absence of any void in any layer of wood. Now if you realy need real marine grade you will have to go to a specialist, but if you have a good eye for timber and know a builder's merchant where you can pick and choose , you probably can find a good batch of WPB ply of better quality than some so called marine ply !.....M.

hi ian, go to your nearest sydenhams, or wykes. they have a decent marine ply... and it's cheap. the difference between wpb and marine ply is the voids, wpb can have voids... marine ply can't (supposedly!)

good luck, steve.

2) Internal veneers must all be of a durable species and the same quality as the face veneers.
3) The glue line must be WBP (Weather and Boil Proof), usually a resorcinol resin. It must be resistant to attack by micro-organism, cold and boiling water, steam and dry heat.
4) Genuine marine plywood should always be stamped with its country of origin and ideally carry Lloyds certification and certification that it is manufactured to BS1088.

Nort sure how close you are to Ipswich - but try Holden Timber, they are near Neptune Marina. Local wood merchants... reasonabley priced, will cut to fit and so on...

Cheers,

Craig.
