Marine Ply Supplier - Chichester

Might be a good idea to ask Nick Gates (Seanick of these forums) he no doubt has a supplier

Alternatively Dolphin Quay boat yard in Emsworth.

Either may be prepared to order in what you require.

I saw some absolute rubbish bought as marine ply from a timber yard in the area a couple of years ago so beware.

Also consider if exterior ply, WBP, would be adequate , it is for many or most purposes. Again though watch the quality.

Tried Covers?

Need to buy some Marine Ply sheets any suggestions c 30 miles radius of Chichester?
Ta

Never bought marine ply there but Covers in Chichester supplied me with hardwood mouldings and prepared timbers to order. Not especially cheap but have a vast store of wood. Worth asking if only to avoid delivery charges if you can collect.

Though what any timber merchant means by marine ply needs to be carefully examined. Alsfords once offered me some Marine Ply described in their literature as "Not suitable for Boat Building" which I thought fair if confusing . And I have an invoice in front of me from Travis Perkins Portslade for two 8x4 sheets of 12mm "Plywood Far East Marine" at £28.84 a sheet which I suspect was roughly the same stuff. I didn't mind much as it was for non-load bearing internal furniture and the surface veneer was OK. The only bit I used out of doors (as varnished hatch boards) delaminated within about 3 years.

I have ordered marine ply from Robbins in Bristol but delivery to Sussex was not cheap.

Let us all know how you get on. Especially if you find somewhere selling less than a full sheet - there used to be a place at Shoreham where you could buy a bit of marine ply cut to the size you wanted but its long gone I fear**. Also worth looking on e-bay for offcuts if you only want a little bit.

**The marine ply I bought there was for another set of hatch boards that I made in 1980. I regularly walk past them in Brighton marina on Eleanor, the first Trident I owned . They still look sound as a bell to me.

marine ply

Travis Perkins in Portslade supplied me with Lloyds 100A1 approved (well, stamped anyway) Israeli marine ply a few years back. I seem to remember that my local Travis Perkins got it sent up from Portslade specially, as they don't normally stock that grade. Not cheap though.

I would be wary of "Far Eastern" ply from builders merchants it very often has voids in the core,

I use Covers a lot for timber as they are keen on price however if I want full spec Marine Ply I would try Timbmet @ Oxford who now own Silvermans (sheet materials) and probably supply a lot of merchants.

Tim at Dolphin Quay supplied me recently, it was only a small quantity but was expensive. I had been into Covers but they would only supply 8 x 4 sheets. They have various quality of ply and do carry specific marine ply.

I can vouch for Robbins timber, Bristol. I just bought some of their 'Super Elite Plus' to make my new rudder with. Delivery wasn't too bad either.
There is lots of 'marine ply' available out there.........make sure that you are getting the right grade for your particular application...........with marine ply I think that the phrase "You get what you pay for" is appropriate!

I looked in Covers yesterday and they could order in what I need but I like to see what i'm buying! They did have something on the shelf labelled 'uncertified' Marine ply but looked very cheap and nasty - at £62 squid a piece ! and definitely not up for the job.

Looks like a trip to Emsworth later... and Waterlooville if necessary.

Delivery from Bristol was more than the timber !

Thanks all.....

Give Mark a call on 07796 352378 he has got a barn full of veneered marine ply in various thicknesses. He's near Bishops Waltham. I had a sheet to make some washboards and it seemed like the pucker deal. Cheap too.
