Marine industry: the squeeze is on!

This morning I visited some companies regarding work that needs doing on the boat.
All of them could accommodate me, were more than happy to help, job could be done by the end of the month... no sucking of teeth, no tutting,... just a "things are a bit quiet lately".
Then, to my complete and utter (pleasant) surprise two out of three spontaneously offered to do jobs ex-VAT cash-in-hand. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

No longer than six months ago this was unheard of, and the simplest job took months, if they could do it at all.
If this is the start of the recession, I'm all in favour.

Cash-in-hand? No such thing. Like "Casual Labour" it was banned by the govt. years ago and nobody has heard of since /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Same experience. Currently having some stainless fabricated. Immediate turnaround on quote. Short lead time. Very pleasent to deal with and thanked for giving them the business.

Roger , you would be surprised at how often marine jobs get done for cash in hand around here

Yep, and two companies who peed me off within the last couple of months have been given their marching orders, as there's no shortage of folk looking for work.

There could be some truth in this.
I've just had a marine engineering company boss leave a message on my answerphone wanting to reduce his over the top estimate to instal heating on my yacht by several hundred pounds after I knocked him back.
He's too late, I'm going to do it myself - and looking forward to doing it too.
