Hi,

Q.a.t. : does anyone make a marine gearbox with a power take off ? It would be for a diesel engine in the 30-35 hp size range and I would not need the p.t.o. when motoring.

Thanks,

Yes, many marine gearboxes for larger engines are available with either clutched or constant PTO. It's unlikely you'd find one for your size of engine though. Why not take the power from the crankshaft pulley instead?

It's at the wrong end for convenience. And there is no lever to control it which hopefully a p.t.o. would have built in.

Thanks for the idea,

The simplest(and cheapest) non-electrical way of getting a PTO from a small engine like that is hydraulics; get a powersteering pump from a scrapyard and drive that off the crank pulley and then get a hydraulic motor to drive whatever needs driving and spool valves to suit. An oil cooler may be needed depending on usage and power requirement. What's it for?

If you can take a belt drive off the propshaft, you could use an electric clutch to go to a shaft drive for whatever ancillaries you want to drive. These are commonly supplied for things like bilge pumps and air conditioning, I believe. Of course, You could do this off the crankshaft pulley to drive a hydraulic pump so the bulk of the equipment could be mounted in a more convenient place.

Typically there is more redundant space to mount things behind the engine than within the box around the front end, but access could become difficult.

PRM boxes have an adaptor kit for a PTO, comes off the oil pump drive. Very popular for FVs. Ring Spencer Carter 01326373423, they have all the gen, and supply clutches to suit.

But the smallest gearbox with PTO is the PRM500, designed for 200+ hp engines - a bit excessive for the OP's 30-35hp engine.

Yes, I guessed that might be the case but did not know. My engine has the 500n, fits down to about 100hp.
However, S-C will know for sure what is available elsewhere.
