Marine gas engineer Portsmouth - Gosport area

I have an old "optimus" cooker and the oven flame failure device isn't working (they "fail safe" so it means no more Fray Bentos pies until I can get it fixed). I used to use Chris Greatbach but jungle drums tell me he's no longer with us.

The cooker is so old, OEM parts are unobtainable but I'd like someone qualified to try replacing the thermocouple and advise if it's possible to jury rig the burner from another manufacturer I go any further. I know I can buy a whole new cooker but I'm not sure it'd be worth it. It's otherwise fully functional, if a trifle tatty.

Thermocouples are readily available from BES et all-all shapes and sizes and lengths

The only place I know nearby is Gascheckmarine based in the Hamble.

He was very helpful supplying me with various parts a few years back.

Thanks. I'd really feel better if a GAS SAFE fitter did the work though. Actually, if it's just the thermocouple I could probably do it safely myself. I don't have a manometer to test any work on the burners though.

Manometer.... This is when a bubble detector fitted into the supply line comes into it's own.

Try calling GasCheckMarine (no connection). I'm sure if the parts are available he'll be able to help and plan in with his next trip to Gosport.

I used GasCheck when having the gas overhauled on our boat. Very neat and tidy job and a decent cost, I thought. However, as with pretty much all businesses in the marine sector, you may have to wait through numerous failed appointments before the work is done!

Thanks for that. I had the cooker off the boat so a visit wasn't essential. I was put onto Mitchell & James in Havant by my son. I delivered the cooker to them yesterday morning. It's ready for collection today. Excellent value and service IMO.
