Looking for a recommended Marine engineer who operates in SW Devon Torbay area. My boat was lifted on Friday, so I spent Sat taking the props off, anodes, Seacocks and generally inspecting all the BWL stuff. To my horror, despite the anodes still having life left, one of the prop shafts has suffered an area of corrosion just at the taper where the props fit, so I need a new shaft :( Thankfully its the shaft that also need a seal too as this has started seeping. Also want to get the all five Seacocks and skin fittings changed too. One skin fitting in particular has distinct pink blotches so not good.

Can anyone recommend a suitably experienced Marine Eng with a good rep in this area to do this sort of work. The boat is a Prestige 32 on Volvos and is out at Dartside Quay

Thanks in advance.

If you're at Dartsideand you have no real preference who you use then Tonto Marine makes sense.
I had an issue seveal years ago with my windlass and they took care of it. Nothing amazing in that and I could have done it myself but time wasn't on my side and they seemed to have plenty of it.
Worth a call I reckon.

Thanks Guys, spoken to Tonto today to get a quote for the work. The other company on the Dartside Quay list was Pedros Yacht Services - they may be a bit specialist though, anyone know them?

Pedros are VERY good at fibreglass, osmosis etc, I have not had any experience of anything but GRP repairs though.

There is a good rigger and a good electrician there too.

have you got any photos? i think this is a common faullt on Jeanneau.

After a bit more investigation, its actually crevice corrosion so is not to do with bonding or anodes. The likely cause seems to be a less than satifactory fit of the prop on the taper. So with the repaired/replacement shaft I will have the two ground to fit each other to avoid this repeating. The other shaft is fine.

Mean't to say, I have been in touch with Vyv Cox of Cox Engineering and as always he was extremely helpful in identifying what was wrong here.

Do my seacocks need replacing?

Having read the campaign in YM about cheap seacocks made of brass in modern yachts. Can anyone tell me if my Beneteau Oceanis 411 (year 2000) has these and if they should be replaced. I can't get a straight answer out of the Beneteau agent, so perhaps they are just brass:confused:.

Just been through this issue. Its very difficult to tell, but the easiest way is to clean the fittings off a bit and look for signs of "pink/red" discolouration indicating that the zinc is coming out of the brass and leaving copper which can become weak and brittle. Read more on www.coxengineering.co.uk On my Jeaneau 2004 I am fairly sure all the fittings are just brass, might be DZR, but could not be sure, so had them removed anyway. In fact they turned out not to be in bad nick in the main (b'stards to get out - had to be ground and cut free) but I did not want to risk any issues at Sea. I am going to fit bronze ones and hopefully then forget about them.
