I have some vibration when she is put into gear, and I cant put my finger on it. I was wondering if anyone knows a good person/company who are good at diagnosing such things in East London.
Any ideas what it could be?

Yacht, fairly young 13hp beta engine. Standard drive arrangement.
my guess would be the stern gland. Do they sieze up a bit if you dont use them for a while? I dont really want to run it for ages getting some grease through if I might cause damage.

Does it do the same in reverse?

Can you turn the shaft by hand when the engine is off and out of gear? If so, can you feel anything? is it stiff?

It could be an unbalanced prop - have you hit anything recently?

yes it does the same in reverse.
I've been swimming in the delightful waters and could easily turn it with one hand, I wouldnt be able to spin it, but I think it is about the same as when I last had her hauled out.
I have hit something recently /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif a pile of sticks floating in close formation on the thames. I blame the autopilot :-)

maybe my first description wasnt brilliant, its more of a rumble, and at higher revs it goes away.

Another interesting point that I remember, is that I had to motor for about an hour after the collision and everything was fine.
it just seems to have gone dodgy after about 2 months away from the boat.

Your cutlass bearing won't wear out if you don't use it - so I'd discount that one for now

Do you have an anode on the shaft? Was it loose? At low revs it could tumble around, at higher revs it could stick in one place.

alternatives: Have you checked the oil level in the engine and gearbox?

The engine is ok, I changed the oil and filter recently and it runs sweet out of gear.
Gearbox - maybe. I havent really given it much attention yet.

Cutlass brg can "de-laminate" and fall out or the rubber sleeve can slide up the shaft out of the bronze holder.
Try moving the shaft to see if there is any lift in it.
also check prop for damage and make sure engine mounts are good.

Hmm you see I cant work out whether to get her lifted or not, it makes running the engine a pain, but it means I can get to stuff more easily.
