Though infrequetly used, and despite the greatest demand ever placed being on it being about 1.5 Kw, my noisy old hand-start generator, that fills most of the starboard side of the lazarette, sounds (when it eventualy starts) to be rattling and wheezing its deathbed revs.

Any recommendatons for a reasonably priced, compact and easily fitted replacement. Preferably diesel, water cooled, electric start.

I got a 5KVA EMI Dynamica from http://www.atlantismarine.co.uk/Dynamica.asp
Wanted a robust one rather than one of the new electroniccy ones.
Based on a Perkins 2 cylinder diesel (same as a Penta 2 cylinder). Probably slightly noisier than the best, but good value. Had some problems with the Exhaust elbow and AMP were good enough to help me out. I needed 5KVA to 'start' the two A/C units I have. You could probably go for less power, but I'd recommend 2 rather than 1 cylinder to keep vibration down.

I've got the smallest Fischer Panda. You can see a thread on the cooling problems I had with it by searching under my name. However I have some positive things to say - firstly, I imagine the fresh water cooled version is very good since the core genset seems fine, it's just that the raw water cooling version I have is a stupid idea. Also the telephone service and advice I got from Chris the technical manager was excellent and very patient. The gensets are small, very quiet especially if you go for the "super quiet" installation with water separator on the exhaust and underwater cooling outlet. Time will tell as to the long term life of it - still less than 20 hours on the clock
