This is from a visitors view

Hartlepool is very nice, plenty to do around the marina and some nice eating houses just next to Marina. good locking times to get in and out and very good staff.

Royal Quays. Last time we were up there a couple of years ago there was not much around the marina, the nearest pub was a good mile away but may have changed , loverly marina and good staff.

Hope this helps

Just left Hpool to go to Royal Quays.

The reason - been trying since January to get myboat lifted out - no room in the boatyard so lost half the season waiting.

Otherwise not much to choose between the two.

Also marina at Sunderland but not sure on space availability - think it involves local club somehow.

Marina at Amble further north - again not sure of availability but very nice place. Think its a bit more expensive than Hpool/Royal Quays.

Whitby may be possible - run by Scarboro Council and used to be waiting list but not sure of present position, also heard some iffy stories about the place

Royal Quays, Sunderland have 24 hour acces (lock at RQ.)

Hpool almost 24 hr - a bit thin on LWS.

Amble roughly half tide

Whitby bit more than half tide but bridge to pass at HW + - 2

RQ, Hpool & S'land are all weather entrance (effectively)

Amble and Whitby - err - not.

Thanks for that, Royal quays is nearest and not too much difference in price, my thought is now unfortunately as my boat is Petrol i wonder how often they replenish there fuel, as i believe alot of the boats are diesel. Will go down and have a look might look at amble too. thanks /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Amble is beautiful (cil) but you could be weather bound a lot due to exposed location.
St Peter's worth a look on the Tyne where you could go up/down river in poor weather.(lock) Marina like a sun trap.

I was only passing through, out of my area.

The nearest Metro station is about a mile and a half away from RQ. Better to get taxi to Nth Shields and catch Metro there.

Think there is a plan for new station near marina/ ferry terminal but not there as of Sunday evening.

Hi, how did you get on?
I'm now in a similar position, trying to find a good mooring in the north east at a decent price. I'm trying to do my research before I buy the 23' macwester that is at present is up in scotland.
