I am considering keeping my boat for a year or two in south Brittany. In or near Vannes sounds good because of travel connections with UK. Lorient is also an option. If you have any recommendations or suggestions I'd be happy to hear them. A swing mooring would be okay if it's in a well-run boatyard. All thoughts, suggestions and cost-info will be welcome. Thanks.

Nearest info I can offer is Brest. Too far North?

40 mins from Brest airport by taxi. Cheap by UK standards and all facilities etc. Only 1 hour from Roscoff by car, too.

We did it a couple of years ago and it worked out fine.

I looked at the main Marina in Benodet last year when I was out there and as far as I could make out it would cost just over £1000 for my 42ft boat, lovely place that was for a pontoon berth.

We have friends who keep their boat on a swinging mooring in Lorient. There is a waiting list for the Marina at Kernoval (near Larmour Plage where they live). I could find out if there are moorings available, although winter storage is a self help, hire the crane job as I understand things.

Vannes is lovely (we were there a week ago) but its tidal and a couple of hours motoring out into the open sea.

There a good trains to Lorient as well. we stopped over in Loctudy for one night but it seemed a bit dead and a fair taxi ride to the station at Quimper.

There is also Port du croesty just outside the Golf which is a big marina well placed boat wise, but not so easy to get to.

from my limited experience and speaking to friends who keep their boat there, Lorient would seem to be favourite.

My enduring memory of Vannes was the stomach churning stench of canine faeces on the streets of the city. Other than that....

Well who could resist after that description!

Two years ago, I put myself on the list for Lezardrieux - nb I am a French resident - and recently went to check up on 'when and if'... latest estimate of a berth is 5 yrs, not including possible berths introduced by having new marina, but dont hold your breath...etc. I blame it on all the Brits who DON'T live here, so bugger off.... /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
