Am considering annual berthing of my Trader 50 in Gibraltar......any views or comments on choices, prices, weather, ease of travel from the UK etc etc. I have done web research so am looking for informed intelligence on the ground as it were.

Thanks

Hiya.

I have used both of the Gib marinas over the years and much prefer Marina Bay.

For me, Queensway Quay suffers from being entirely surrounded with high rise buildings, access only during office hours and the unwelcome levanter cloud that always feels dismal! Only advantage is that its 11 seconds nearer the main street!

Part of Ocean Village (Marina Bay) is on a so called premium rate of prices and is entirely avoidable.

For us, the old part is much better. Have spent a lot of time here over the past 12 years.

I find the local bars and restaurants have much variety, the Marina Staff are very good and its a 10 minute walk to departures.

Downside, there is an occaisional surge that sets up in strong winds so it can get a bit bumpy. Plenty of fenders work.

Weather most of the year is mild with warm summers. Generally quite windy in the Straits though so trips across can be a bit bumpy. Bit of planning required for visits round to Cadiz etc as a delay of a day or two coming back may be needed.

Do send a PM if you wish....I can pose now and say we are off to Morocco this lunchtime, back tomorrow afternoon so reply will be delayed!! :)

Good luck with your choice.

Hi,

There are 3 Marinas in Gib, two of which are connected. Marina Bay (old marina), Ocean Village (new marina next door) and Queensway Quay, which is seperate Marina inside the Harbour. I have had boats in Ocean Village and Queensway Quay. If I was using her as a Holiday base, liked to party and have fun I would put her in Ocean Village. However, I prefer Queensway as it is quieter and cheaper and still has good restaurants and bars but no loutish behaviour. So now have my boat in Queensway.

The best Idea is to come down and look at them, I think Marina Bay the Cheapest, then Queensway and lastly Ocean Village. Just remember that Queensway is not 24hr Access only 8-8 in winter and 8-10 in Summer.

Paul

Happy to answer specifics.

Paul,

thanks for your post. i think that OV probably will suit us better and interestingly they are quoting cheaper than Queensway.

Presume the access you refer to is opening times of the marina offices and landward access?

Yes it is the office times, but they put a boom accross the marina entrance as well.

No problem. As the Pirate said, It is the office and a boom across the entrance that restricts access to Quennsway. You can fly Direct to Gib From Liverpool (EasyJet), Manchester (Monarch), Luton (Monarch), Heathrow (BA), Gatwick (EasyJet). BMI is due to start flying in June from EastMidlands as well. Lots more flights in the summer than winter. Ocean Village is also only 10 Mins walk from the Airport terminal (across the runway). Unfortunately this does mean you are moored within a 100m of the Runway...which is OK if you like planes!

Any more questions let us Know,

Cheers

Paul
