Re: Marina\'s and popular anchorages in north west spain

Tons of places

la coruna is a nice town.

Bayona is good marina - there are actuially two withthe old one being directly behind the fort and to the right with yacht marina and lovely views, the other which sends out dinghies to coax you to their marina next door instead (straight ahead) probably with not quite such nice views.

Vivero is a good hiding hole, anchor in not-so good holding in bay or go up to the marina where it is dead cheap esp from the nice gnarling old bloke who runs the place.

i wd say foldup bikes v useful cos towns quite spread out and marinas often a bit distant.

Best thing to do is Hire a car either in coruña or Vigoand drive roundthe coast road,I did it years ago that way you will see all the harboursand bays etc, wont take long probably three days max going slow, pleanty of places to stay, best in spring before holidays.Hasta luego!

Last winter we drove the whole of the Spanish north and west coasts. We were astonished at just how many anchorages there are. If you don't fancy spending cash in the marinas I suspect it would be perfectly possible to anchor throughout. Personally I would be looking for the unpopular anchorages but there seems to be plenty of choice.

I've been told Camarinas is nice, but not been myself. Been around the coast a fair bit though by road and love it. Plan to stop by Gijon on my way to Bilbao (where I hope to base my tub). Gijon's a decent city in a nice region. But then, most of Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and Basque Country are lovely anyway... Maybe I'm biased. Jem.

Loads of lovely anchorages, two of my favourite places are Camarinas (very helpful friendly Yacht club with small pontoon with fuel) lovely area to explore in a dinghy, as well as Cediera, entrance can be interesting in both but not really difficult.

You could easily spend three or four summers exploring. The Yacht club at Bayona is definately worth a visit as others have said. Lovely view from the bar in big comfy armchairs.

Try also Ares on the N-coast of the Ria de Ares y Betanzos.
Driving along the coast, including the coast of the rias will show many nice anchorages and quite a lot of marinas. I only know the marinas of Coruna, Sada, Vigo and Portosin. Although Coruna is a nice and interesting town, the old marinas are poor, problems with the wake of incomig and leaving fishing-boats. The new marinas in the heart of town are probably better, but I have never been there with a ship.
When driving along the coast Cedeira is one of the villages I like a lot. There are always yachts anchored in the ria. Other villages, which I like are Muros and Rianxo. The first does not have a marina, but plenty of places to anchor. Rianxo does have a marina, but I don't know which depth it has. While in Galicia do eat the "marisco", the specialty of the region. It stands for all kind of shell-fish. I like in particular the mussles and the "navajas". A navaja is also a knife, usually a pocket-knife, which indicates the type of shell-fish. The local wine of the southern part of Galicia is the Albariño. It is considered one of the best spanish white wines. Try it, although it is not the cheapest whine.

Oooh, and here was I planning to relocate to Bilbao... now I am considering making my base further west. Seems like the sailing would be a lot less hassle out this end of the N coast, and I get the impression costs are a bit lower too. The problem I find with this area is it's remoteness; although an advantage in many ways, it also means getting there and getting back to work is a tad more hassle- less direct UK flights/ferries than over Cantabria/Basque way. Have to make do with ($*£%$!!!) Iberia flights via Madrid I think. Tell you though, looking at property in the area, it's got a lot going for it... Shhh.

Ryan air are now here,if paying in uk pounds probably cheapish but for locals too expensive, but then who said ordinary working people should go sailing, fogot my place....!

I may be a worker, but not so sure about ordinary... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hahey, just looking up the Ryanair flights to SDC, sorry, SCQ(?), seems they go every day, and cheap certainly. Great news, ta. Far better than Iberate, and direct to/from Stan at a decent hour.

Re: Marina\'s and popular anchorages in north west spain

It may have been mentioned, but Ria Muros (I think its called), is stunning. Portosin which has a Marina, is a little non-descript.

But there was another town across from Portosin, which looked vary attractive, the name, however escapes me.

According to the galician papers, Iberia is going to stop its flight from Santiago to London Heathrow and transfers it to Coruna, same flying time, same time of departure and arrival.

Many thanks to all who have contributed........we are staying in Vivaro and have the car to get around ....and from the sound of it cannot wait! thanks again.

Re: Marina\'s and popular anchorages in north west spain

This thread amazes me. I sailed into Camarinas in '77 and the place was sleeping in the past.
They quite openly threw all their rubbish straight into the sea! However it's great sailing round
to Bayonna. I do intend to return especially with the new flights. Only trouble is getting there,
now boat is in Trieste. Going to be a long trip!

Re: Marina\'s and popular anchorages in north west spain

Having 'rockhopped' from Gihon round to the Portuguese border, its all wonderful, do borrow a NWcoast pilot book if you can ,shame you will be approaching each ria by road and not sea!
Just don't write an an article about it-hoards,herds,marina inconveniences and profiteering follow..
