Do you think that visitor fees should be based on boat + number on board? Say £20 for boat + £5 for each crew member? So a boat crewed with six would be £50 (£8.33 per head) whereas a couple cruising would be £30 (£15/head). It would better reflect the impact upon services used ashore (showers/loos) and water consumed etc. It seems fair on both the larger crew (low £/head) as well as recognising that the cruising couple have low useage of facilities ashore and making it more affordable. This would also have to be tied in to LOA as well so the £20 fixed boat element might also have to be on a sliding scale. Outrageous suggestion or a better and more equitable arrangement?

The genuine resource that restricts selling visitors berths is the number of berths available - it is rare that a marina is going to say "We can't fit another visitor in - the queue for the showers would be too long" and the marginal cost to the marina of another person on the boat is minimal (a few pence for the showers / water usage).

Also it is much easier to monitor the boat and its size than count the number of crew on board.

So the charging for the berth itself is the most sensible approach from the business perspective. I'm afraid fairness doesn't really enter into it - if we don't like it then we don't have to go there.

The last time I used a marina, they charged me 20 quid a night for just me in a 22 foot boat, I didn't think that was bad, considering that I got to use the facilities, but I wouldn't want to pay more than that for a small boat like a 22 footer. Twas Falmouth Marina by the way.

How sweet! Marinas and fair pricing must be an oxymoron. My preference is a charging system based on water space occupied e.g. LWL x beam - would penalise all those fat-arsed ugly AWBs.

Well said that man! Yep a sliding scale based on displacement:cool::D

Well, some marinas in Croatia charge as follows,

Charge for the boat per metre
Charge for each person on board
Charge for electricity
Charge for water
Charge for rubbish disposal

All nicely itemised on the bill, and then VAT added.

On top then comes tourist tax for each person on board (even if you've already paid it) and they charge for showers (via token purchase or coin operation).

You can quite easily run up to €60-€70 per night on a 10m AWB.

Hook is much cheaper .... ;)

If they can get away with it

Probably the most they can get away with! I'm always amazed there aren't more private Marina's cropping up with clever central river berthing (big rivers).

In Holland they charge for a berth on length plus a small E1.50 tourist tax per person plus leccy. Still half the price of UK marinas.

Maybe there should be some rebate if you spend loads of money in a marina owned bar or restaurant. One way or the other they have to cover costs and make a huge profit so it's just playing with numbers. As long as the overall charge is reasonable compared to others in the locality. Round here that means everywhere except MDL.

Charge according to the length of the pontoon.
Why should I pay according to the to the length of my boat when the marina directs me to a miniscule pontoon that won't even reach to my midships cleat?

Also: when another boats rafts up to you, the price of your berth should be halved.

I can see a flaw with your plan e.g.

Bigger boats should pay less

shore power not used, as not strong enough to run cooker , washer, oven , icemaker etc

showers not used

one 15 mtr takes less space than 2 x 7.5 etc.

deffo agree a discount for rafting up, with a fender charge to the alongside er.

now ducking beneath the bulwarks!

With wooden yachts free of charge.

Now you're being silly !

Some revision is needed though.

I reckon :-

25% off during weekdays.

50% off for oap's.

25% extra if you wear crocs.

40% off if you sail in without hitting.

10% off if you come with a parrot.

30% more if you have a wind charger.

25% off if you can provide a blazer and cravat.

500% more if you have been racing.

You've missed off SunSail charter boats :)

He missed off Bavaria boats as well, they should all pay a premium in marinas, They are the Bumwas of the sailing world!:D

OK, don't shoot me, I actually think they are excellent value for money! A Bav 42, with a deep lead keel and the tall rig would be very acceptable, but it would be very different sailing to what I am used to:) The downside is that I would probably have to keep her in a marina:eek:

I just broke out in a cold sweat at the thought!
