I'm probably expecting the perpetrators to be too decent, but I wonder if embarassment about cleaning up is the key, and little wet room compartments containing both loo and ' over bath type ' shower - so the shower head could be used as a , erm, cleaner - might be the answer ?

Signs like ' please leave these facilities as you would wish to find them ' clearly have little effect, and let's not forget our country and ourselves are judged by overseas visitors on things like loos; an ex girlfriend refuses to visit St Malo or possibly all of France again after a harrowing incident involving a public loo !

We normally anchor, but for a change, spent three nights on the pontoons in Stornoway, a couple of weeks ago.

The loos and showers were immaculate. Well done Stornoway Harbour Trust.

We have what I assume are pump out deck fittings but without pump out stations would never use them. We simply open the outlet seacock to drain the holding tanks. Are yours below sea level?

A simple diverter switch from either heads to sea/heads to the holding tank which is situated below the waterline in a locker.

A Henderson Mark 5 pumps to a below the waterline skin fitting via a loop in the pipe for siphoning.

Unfortunately we are a little light on pump out stations in the UK.

I don't often use marinas, but in the past couple of years I have been in to Largs, Port Bannatyne, Portavadie, Ardfern, Mallaig, Stranraer, Carrickfergus, Bangor, Kirkcudbright and Girvan. In every case the toilets have been clean at all times I have used them - except for Girvan, which doesn't have any, and even then the council cludgie in the car park opposite was fine.

Conclusion: Southerners are pigs.

Conclusion;

some Southerners are pigs, as are some midlanders, northeners and Sottish lowlanders and Highlanders, the worst toilets and accompanying manners I have ever seen were in nightclubs at Stranraer & Fort William.

I am proud to be half Scottish, my Father is from Strathdon...

You should know better Jumbleduck, the South of England is so relatively crowded there are bound to be a few berks who make or rather leave an impression by the law of averages...

The last time I visited St Malo inner basin facilities there were no loo seats!! unbelievable in this day and age.

Common marinas, how hard can it be? At peak times - bank holidays, regattas, flotilla visits etc - do the cleaning twice a day instead of once (one of these being after the last 'customer' at night or before the first in the morning). You've got the additional revenue coming from the added visitors, so 'suck it up' that there's a little bit of extra cost involved in providing an adequate service.

So do the culprits have staff cleaning up after them at home, does mummy wipe their botty for them too?

It is also noticeable that some are better and cleaner than others.

If they are nice toilets/showers do people respect them better?

Currently at the new Roscoff Marina and toilet facilities are superb.

Always found that East Cowes were among the best. Hamble Point was good having been recently refurbished but I think my excessive annual berthing fee paid for a lot of that!!

I think you can tell a lot about people from the condition they keep the boat in, if the boat looks dirty and uncared for, then they are unlikely to care about keeping anything else clean,
Possibly but I cannot believe that people leave their bogs at home like this so why do it in a 'public' one? Applies to all public loos, not just those in marinas.

Not if our experience at St Kats last winter is anything to go by. They have the most fabulous faciliies in the main block, but it didnt stop them getting blocked with tissue, water splashed everywhere, broken glass in shower, hairdryers pulled off the wall, empty bottles left around, whiskers in the sink, etc, etc. IT's almost as if the smarter (and more expensive) the facilities, the more skanky people expect that someone is being paid to clear up after them.

Interestingly, after they were improved the access was changed so that only berthholders could get in (previously any member of jo public could wander in) and everyone thought it would get better, but it didn't.

I have used our marina facilities for over 20 years and I have always found them impeccable.

Fairly obvious for a selfish person - if it's your own loo at home, you're going to have to use it again and it will still be in the state you left it. If it's a public loo, you will either never use it again, or by the time you do someone will have cleaned it.
