Hi All, I want to buy a boat and have it based in a marina for a couple of years. The reason for the Canaries is because I am still working so I will be making frequent trips and the climate in wintercan be very mild. I spent 4 weeks on an oil rig in Las Palmas in January and it only rained once. I will be a semi live aboard. A lot of the forumites have advised "buying a big a boat as you can afford" I am looking at boats in the 40'-44' range up to 50,000 pounds. What I need to know, is there a massive difference percentage wise on marina charges between a 40' and a 44' boat. It would be on a 12 month contract. If there is then I will keep to the 40' sizes. regards RPP

We spent last winter in the canaries on our 11 metre yacht. The banding for costings were, in the majority of marinas, 10 to 12 metres and 12 to 14 metres with about a 25% jump in rates between the bands. Having said that there were some great rates to be had with Las palmas on Gran Canaria being the best value we found at 9 euros per night, and santa cruz at 12.5 euros per night as a close second. These prices included taxes and would have been reduced by about 30% if we'd taken out a 6 month contract. We loved and will return.

Keeping just under 12metres makes sense ,allowing you possibly to get a better boat for the money. Costs (maintenance) don't rise by length, they rise by a cube of the length!. Whatever you buy ,remember thta marinas away from UK tend to go by your boat's registration papers----if they say 12.1 metres, you're into the next band. If ,like mine they say 9.26m (boat is NAB35---DO THE SUMS) that is what they charge for. You do get allocated some short pontoons, though!
Think also about the size of boat you'd be comfortable single handing----12metres is a lot easier than 14metres.

Remember 12metres is 39 ft,not 40ft
