I've heard that marinas are removing hosepipes from the pontoons to conform to water board regulations. At our marina, at the end of the hosepipes we have valves and the hoses are stored on reels. Does this overcome the problem?

May not solve all the problems. We waited over 2 hours whilst a Halberg Rassey was obviously using the marina hose, finally in desperation, I approached the owner and explained that I merely wished to fill my water tank, a task of no more than 5 minutes.

"Right Ho" came the reply "just finishing off clearing my blocked loo - won't be long". With marina hoses, you just don't know what you are getting. But don't drink the water!

I think that the main concern is the growth of micro-organisms in the water left standing in an infrequently used pipe. For instance, if I remember rightly, legionella thrives in water at 20-30 deg C, and contaminated water droplets could be inhaled whilst hosing a boat down. Providing your own pipe would allow regular sterilization and stop the worry about previous uses.

Who sterilises their hose pipe?
Never ever heard of anyone doing that.

It's all just EU mumbo jumbo trying to protect us from something that a little common sense would deal with equally well. Ridiculous.

Maybe a bit OTT with hosepipe but, having seen a friend go through the stress of an HSE investigation into a Legionella infection (thought to have originated in a shower head), I can understand caution on the part of some marinas. He was cleared by the way, thanks to a recognition of the control measures in place.
