last count was 5 engines, chemical spill unit and an ambulance plus all the extra fire support vehicles ...

I heard that noone was onboard - nothing official though.

Difficult to see through the smoke, but looks more like a Targa, so hopefully not Moose, though it's a tragedy for the owner irrespective of who he/she is.

I wonder how it started - I'm not making light of a serious situation, but she looks too big to be petrol engined...............

I heard from Peters that it was a Phantom 46, not a 43. Owner was not on board but close by when the fire stared. I counted 42 firemen at the scene. The wreck has now been lifted into Peters Shipyard, several hotspots were then put out by the fire brigade who are currently monitoring with a thermal imaging device. Looks like the props and anodes are the only bits worth salvaging.

I wasn't going to bring it up, but since you mentioned it here goes: firstly, I feel really sorry for the owner, lets hope she was properly insured.

This is the 5th or 6th MOBO fire reported on here since I joined in April, and ALL of them have been diesel powered. Not that that matters because they have all (current one aside, as we dont know yet) had ignition sources other than the fuel. Most electrical, and all have been burnt to a crisp, without any petrol on board.

A fire on a boat is a nightmare, and just as likely to happen on diesel as well as petrol boats, so can we finally lay to rest the petrol is going to kill me premis? Unfortunately, you boat is much more likely to catch fire for other reasons.

Absolutely agree - my boat's petrol engined and I was trying to pre-empt the inevitable comments. Petrol undoubtedly burns better than diesel, but both of them need to be ignited and, frankly, grp burns pretty well, whatever the engines - as the photos show.

Doesn't that simply show that a lot more boats are diesel powered than petrol?

I understand the point you are making but surely, once a fire has started, it will be worse, and probably explosive, on a petrol boat?

Any spillages whilst filling will also be more hazardous.

Incidently, my boat uses petrol.

I agree, a fire on board will be worse with a petrol tank going up, but it will not start BECAUSE the boat is petrol - and the Phantom is hardly in great shape with non flamable diesel on board, and you wouldnt have wanted to be near that either...

My boat is on the next pontoon up, often admired your green boat when passing on the path. Hope you didnt suffer any damage.

Glad no one was hurt, brings it home though, when its so close, you think, that could have been mine.

Really sorry for the owners, hopefully insurace will cover the loss, but there will always be those personal things that cant be replaced.
