Is it now normal for electricity to be included in the price of an overnight stay, or is it charged separately? My impression is that in French marinas it is included. (As you can tell, I rarely visit marinas.) And if it is included, what are the chances of getting a discount because we don't use shore power? (Yes, that's right: we never wash and we cook on an open fire, and we use a fisherman anchor, and we call port 'larboard'.)

Some marinas do include electricity, others don't. IIRC, Island Harbour are charging £10.00 per night for electricity over the period of the Isle of Wight festival and asking customers to bring splitters so that a limited number odf supplies may be shred around!

You find both in the UK, I would guess in the Solent area more charge than don't.

I find those that do charge very frustrating, they tend to charge about £2.50 a night but as all I use it for is to charge the batteries (and maybe boil a kettle or two) I find that excessive.

I have not stayed in any marina that meters the visitor moorings - probably because it is simply not worth the effort for the little they can charge.

Marinas are not allowed to charge you more per unit than it costs them, but they can charge as much as they like for providing the service (i.e. a connnection charge)

Victoria Marina in Guernsey has a flat one off £2 charge for electricity, for one or five nights. Additionally wifi is free and one free day stay every fourth night (except July and August) and the people are really nice.

This is all very useful: many thanks. I am still hoping to hear about practice in French marinas.

Calais marina the elec. is included 10A supply but plenty of socket so you can have 2 or 3 x 10A if you have extra leads.

As others have stated, I have never been charged extra in France, either at marinas or campsites. Indeed, on the Seine there are completely free overnight pontoons for several boats (Haltes Nautique?) which sometimes have free electricity provided! On top of that the local supermarket will most often deliver free to your boat. Wonder why such ideas don't catch on over here /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

UK South Coast there's usually a charge.
Most of France: from recent experience (Normandy & Pas de Calais) it's included in the price. Similarly in Belgium - some exceptions seem to have adopted the Dutch 'metered' system.

IMHO, charging extra for electricity is a rip-off. The price of a berth is the price of a berth - all in!
Hotels don't charge you extra for the room when you want to switch a light on. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
