My wife is specialist doctor working for the state health service for which she is paid20,000euros yearly. How come we cannot afford a berth let alone a yacht here in Spain. One reason is marina berths here in galicia are being provided not for local people but for richer europeans. On the eve of the Volvo Ocean Race the government is going on a total publicity junket having just discovered mixing boats and water you get money,it has entirely fogotten ordinary people who are expected to be spectators, unless that is you can launder mon ey ,because a normal working person has no chance.

When I mix boats and water, I get money loss.
I agree that as my good lady is also a Specialist Nurse and gets paid peanuts we should not afford boats.
But then so do I earn peanuts releatively.
Marinas are even more expensive in UK, which is why I use a swinging mooring. I used to have a mud mooring which was cheaper still.

Please send formula for mixing boats and water to get money.

And do you think things are any different elsewhere?
I find it hard to justify boat ownership financially and that after buying a near-derelict and carrying out all repair and maintenance myself, with a lot of help from people in a similar position on these forae.
Last year I decided I could no longer afford a marina berth so moved to a mooring. The joke about standing under a cold shower trearing up banknotes doesn't apply... I can't let it.
There are two reasonable wages coming into the household and we don't spend wildly on other things, so while I sympathise with your frustration, you are not downtrodden.

Well making money out of mixing boats and water is easy.Take a nice stretch o mud berth build luxuary flats overlooking it ad cafe designer clothes boutique ete and charge somebody to tie up in front as long as they want inteernet conections telephone .As tourism is one of the up and coming indusries there is no where else to keep a boat because its made impossible.you go in a marina or nothing

Tearing up banknotes

To be right, the quote, attributed to Ted Heath but probably much older, is approximately as follows:

"Ocean racing is like standing under a cold shower and tearing up banknotes."

We do ourselves a great disservice to ourselves by repeating it; it is emphatically not my experience of ordinary sailing, and many on this forum are a testament to the fact that if you have a will you can sail on a very slender budget.

How about "Sailing is like sitting in my favourite armchair being reminded of how lucky I am to be alive."

yes it's expenseive - you either have to earn a lot on money or spend a huge proportion of it on your hobby/lifestyle statement/whatever.

here, in the UK, you have the further option of cheaper boating associated with inconvienence - tidal berths, trots, etc etc but new people into the pastime seem to associate boat owning with a marina berth automatically. Personally I don't blame them - my days of only having limited tidal access for the damm redcrest to get out to the trots in the middle of a muddy river are long behind me (but SWMBO actually comes out on the boat with me now!).
I spend a huge proportion of my income on my pastime and I don't have a large boat or an expensive berth - it's my choice.

There are more options in uk tidal waters than here in Galicia and if you cannot live ni or near the harbour there really is no option to a marina berth which are being built either with state cash or privately. An interesting result of this is the local offshre islands are restricted to a certain number of visitors, you have to agree with the state your visit, this is because it is exspensive to own large boatand keep it so people buy small ones which cannot brave the atlantic beyond,my theory anyway!!!

Here,in Galicia is, more or less, like everywhere else.

You shall have the boat you can afford, and if you think marina berths are too expensive here, have a look at the prices in Valencia and sorroundings.

Without doubt you are right, but when I see rias almost empty of sailing boats maybe in Galica they could start off chargeing Galician prices as Galicians earn a lot less than Germans of British of even Valencianas.

Well, mogy. All depends on your priorities. I know people who prefers to have a medium size boat better than a good house and a good car. These people live an a hired flat and have a very old car.

As far as I know, the mooring charges in a marina in Britain are well above what a normal salary can pay in this country.

Also there is one thing we have to take on account. When we are young we want everything and we want it now, but to get established with a family, a decent salary, etc. takes time.

Saludos (Regards)

José

P.D. Sorry for my english. It is a bit rusty

You maybe right but my argument is that the facilities in Spain or in Galicia seem to be too expensive in relation to incomeand that the Xunta seems more interested in high profile events like the VOR thanfacilities for ordinary people,We have been priced out of marinas so sold our boat. hasta luego!

Hi

just an update. I've received my 2006 mooring bill today. The details are :

Location : Port Camargue
Facilities : excellent : 5000 moorings here !
Cost : Euro 2350 ( GBP 1600 ?) for a 10.5m boat including free electricity year round, pontoon water, excellent security, haul out , pressure spraying hull, dry storage for 10 days, and return to water.

Seemed expensive to me until I checked out UK costs.

FACTS!.
Some years ago I bought, for 20 years, a 10 metres mooring place in a Club Náutico in Galicia.
The total amount I paid was Euros 8.500. Naturaly, I had to pay the fee to became a member of this Club, which was Euros 2.000.

The monthly fee for mooring maintenance, insurance, security, water, and club membership amounts to Euros 50,-

Anybody thinks this is too expensive?

mogy? do you want to know where?

Regards

José
