Just returned from a great holiday cruising in Chesapeake Bay (USA).
Only downside were the charges for a marina berth. These ranged from $2.50 to $3.00 per foot per night. That made our average bill for an overnight stop in a 40 footer a whacking £72 PLUS electricity at $10 per night (approx £6.50). Eat you heart out Dolphin Quay!

On a more positive note, this really is a great cruising area with hundreds of beautiful spots to drop a hook and some fascinating places to visit.

The latest scam here seems to be to charge by the length of the pontoon rather than the length of the boat, in other words you have to fit them rather than them fitting you. Camper & Nicholson have just changed to such a system and claim others are doing likewise. Is this true?

Re charging for the length of pontoon

Last ime I was in Bucklers hard they operated a minimum length charge of 39 feet and gave us a pontoon that couldn't have been longer than 20 feet.

It's certainly true in all the Puertos de Andalucia, tho' you'll only have to pay for a big berth when there's not a small one handy.
The other common habit in S Europe is to charge on a m2 basis - this is very bad news for multihulls.
It's a good idea to bone up on ones' amchoring skills, isn't it.

On the other hand... I just got back from St Brieuc (Le Legue). 16 Euros for a ten metre boat and the first night free, oh yes and the showers free too!

nearer home, i have a bill for my 9.8m cat for £12.48 from Swansea marina, £16 from Watchet, less from Milford.

Like it or not, you have to expect high prices in the popular places. Same in France on their South coast.

That's quite expensive by european standards (except in high season), the best berth I had was FF252 a month alongside a pontoon with electricity and water inclusive.

It is quite interesting, the further you get away from the UK S coast, on the French coast, the less the overnight mooring charges become.
