Universal Marina on the Hamble is actually advertising for customers. While it may be on the less 'fashionable' side of the river I can't remember any Hamble marina having to do so before. Has the yacht market topped out?

As far as I know they have renewed most pontoons, they are all now linked to shore and have services, expanded their capacity a lot, amalgamated the old Universal and Crableck marinas and put up their prices.
It may be on the less fashionable side of the river, but I was there for some years and I liked it because it was quiet, peaceful and more rural than the others. It was a bit run down in parts, but it was also significantly cheaper.

Bet that's all changed now.

When they were re-working the Marina they had some great deals on for early payment. Quite a few took advantage and moved there. This year they have hiked the price up to usual hamble prices so the people who were cost concious (those tht took advantage) have probably voted with there feet. For them they have probably seen a £1500 raise!

IMHO

One more reason for choosing the East Coast. I still don't understand the London obsession with keeping a boat on the Solent when the East Coast beckons...

One of the reasons might be the crummy roads from central London to all points East.

Give me the A3, M3 etc any day over the A12, A13 etc.

Takes forever grinding out through east London.

I have sailed on the eastcoast a few times but from Burnham (if I remember correctly) its 14mls east between the sand banks before you can turn North or South. Enjoyed Shotley to Ipswich though. Many of the others are not quite so bad but appear similar in that you hace to go a long way east before you can head to where you want to go.

If you have a choice of East Coast or South this aspect of long drags between sandbanks and the closer proximity of France (compared to Belguim & Holland), road ^& rail networks (as another has mentioned) I think has resulted in most people being prepared to pay the higher prices of the South coast. I can't understand why you can't understand it!!

As I am based in Southampton and have no choice I would prefer if more stayed on the East Coast leaving us Southerners with more room!!

look at their prices - £5450 for a 10m boat - not quite bottoming out yet.

Wow. We pay less than £3k in chichester marina for a 10mtr berth with the added bonus of the harbour to play in if the Solent is a bit rough.

No, no, you chaps all stay down there on the South Coast, it's much better down there. We hate it up here on the East Coast, it's awful.

Hi
I don't think the annual charge will fill you with delight either. It just struck me that until now the Hamble rates have increased to frightening levels unless you are on a city bonus scheme - I ain't. They have never before had trouble getting customers. Maybe the fact that Universal are having a slight problem means that the pips are starting to squeak.

If anything Universal are pretty much the same as MDL (Mercury) for an annual charge on 13.2 m. MDL is a crippling 8100, and Universal are an equally crippling 7850.

But MDL do not charge 2% on Credit cards and the annual membership includes 15 days at another MDL marina free. A CC charge at 2% is 154 (on 7850) plus the value of about 35 per night at other marinas is around 475... Therefore assuming you use the visitor nights the Universla equivalent is 7850 + 154 + 475 = 8475 or thereabouts...

So I guess there really is very little in it. It is still the old adage - Market rules always win -and I think demand still outstrips supply!!!

I looked at moving from Chichester to Swanwick - both Premier - because Swanwick would be maybe 15/20 minutes quicker for me and I found that I was willing to put a few extra miles on the car rather than pay another £2k every year to park the boat.
