Travelling in the Sardinia and Northern Italay area next season (2007) and looking for a good berth for the winter of 2007. Boat is 12 metre sailing yacht.

Has anyone any idea of good berths, and or prices for the marinas in the area.

thanks

We stayed in Viareggio this summer. They have lots of marina space (1500 berths) but it can be hard to reserve so get in early. They also have different types of serviced berthing and prices. For winter storage you would do fine with a cheaper space because the only difference is that the pontoons are older (the Madonnina). The shelter etc. is the same. Viareggio is also easily accessible by rail from Pisa and the town is very well serviced with shops, restaurants etc. It has some of the finest chandlers you will see anywhere in the world and a ramble around the industrial area which is totally devoted to leisure boating is an education.
Be careful of the entrance which is narrow. For full information (in Italian) go to http://www.viareggio-portospa.it

Good winter storage in Sardinia at Castelsardo and Porto Torres. The ferry runs from Torres, which is about 40 km from the airport. Both well sheltered. Castelsardo is the cheapest marina we stayed in throughout the 2006 season (by a big margin, only 13 Euros per night in August!), it is owned and run by the local commune. Berthing afloat or ashore. Not recommended if you want to live aboard as the town doesn't have a lot to offer. Torres is a far bigger town with plenty of shops. We were offered a winter berth afloat for about 1300 Euros.

We have wintered in Saint Teressa de Gallura in North East Sardinia for the last two winters and are very happy. The cost for a birth from September - May is around EUR 500 including electricity. Security is great and the staff are really friendly and helpful. Easy access from Olbia (Easyjet), though not a lot to do there in the winter if planning to stay aboard. In that case head to Spain.

Cheers.
