My marina is shortly going to install Plaxton Acess control using your smart phone to gain entry to site/toilet block rather than the present swipe card or key fob. Any body had experience of the system, Looks as if a guest wants to leave the marina and return or use the toilet block I will have to lend them my phone.

A bit of an assumption that everyone has a smart phone and what happens when your battery is flat?!
Doesn’t sound like a great idea to me but then I know nothing about the system.

There is the option of asking for a key fob and I have asked for one to be reserved for me as I guess they will only have a limited number available! The point is this technology for the sake of technology. No doubt if using the smart phone app all access will be logged somewhere, big brother in addition to the cctv. To me the present system using keyfob or card entry works fine.

assuming you mean paxton not plaxton. you've probably already used this system on many other office/hotel/warehouse buildings before but always with a fob or card instead of mobile app.
effectively all the app is doing is replacing the fob as a different interface its no better or worse than having a fob and just for your paranoia all your access with a normal fob/card/code is always logged entry times gates etc so big brother already has you.

They will already be logging accesses under the current system of swipe cards/key fobs, so no difference there.

I do agree though that using a mobile phone adds a layer of complexity and potential modes of failure that a swipe card or key fob doesnt have - mainly to do with the phone having a flat battery, and you having to give your phone to guests to allow them to come and go on their own.

Sorry, not really paranoid over the logging, nothing to hide but it seems to have become the norm in today's world.

I can see no logging taking place at the moment. The shower/toilet block has access via a keypad using a standard to all users 4 digit code. The key fob I use for the gate is a typical garage door opener, Just given to me (deposit taken :)) out of a box, so was not programmed specifically to me.

Just really wondered if other marina's used this system and how it worked for them. I have requested a "normal" remote as well as being able to use a smart phone simply because it would be useful for a guest to use the facilities without me/my phone being present.

Yes Paxton not Plaxton, just a typo

I don't know yet if the phone acts as a proximity signal sender, just have to be reasonably near, or if you have to unlock the phone, open the app and press "open". If the latter not convienient for guests

agree,

we have Paxton in the company, also for some doors inside fe my office,
we use both systems (Phones and RFID) together,
the RFID is with my key's, and mostly I have one of both (phone or key's) with me
its good to have both options,
the disadvantage of the Iphone app; its a bit more sensitive, so that when you walk along such a door, it might be clicking unwanted
the locks can be in a toggle on / off mode, or a timer mode, which is most likely used in the marina,

the RFID's are cheap, so there should be unlimited quantity, but they are indeed personal, unless they all get the same code, which I doubt, bcs with a personal code, they can indeed track who's in and out, and they can disable the rfid when someone is no member anymore
