I have owned my boat for 13 years and apart from an engine rebuild 2 years ago have not had any major problems. However my rudder has now got some play in it as when i fix the tiller in place to stop the rudder ranging about i get a clunking noise which is getting worse.
Does anyone have knowledge of how the rudder is constucted ie bearings etc and or a diagram or in fact how to tighten the rudder to stop the play.
Thanks in advance

Is the play between the tiller and the rudder stock, or between the stock and the rudder itself? If the latter it's failure within the rudder.
Some Marcon boats, certainly some Sabres, and possibly Tomahawks, had stainless steel stocks with internal mild steel tangs welded on. The welds eventually fail through corrosion.
The cure is to split the rudder and re-weld with ss tangs, quite a big job.
I can't remember how my tiller was fastened to the stock, so can't really help if the play is therte.

Yes, 3 possibilities Wear on tiller attachment to stcok; wear in bearings in stern tube or (hopefully not) stock loose in blade for reasons already suggested.

Different solution for each cause.

I have just rebuilt my Sabre rudder which was stainless steel stock and mild steel tangs  One tang fell off while removing the whole thing so it needed sorting.

Between myself and IainC of this forum, we can let you have lots of info if that is the problem.

Good Luck

Ian
