We have just left the Mar Menor - we anchored right at the southern end down by the beach used by the locals, off the southern marina, and when we anchored there were a couple of jellyfish but within a few hours they had gone. There were dozens of people swimming from the beach, we swam from the boat, over two days, without seeing a single jellyfish after those first ones.

There seems to be a bigger problem in Ibiza this year. Seems that the jellyfish just appear and leave again suddenly. I have heard that it is due to currents of a particular temperature, don't know if that's true, but Mar Menor is like a warm bath!

Ive recently returned from Ibiza & confirm, some days jellys were everywhere whilst others none. Only thing is the jellys in Ibiza sting whilst the brown ones in the mar menor dont. Ive heard they have recently demolished the last resteraunt on sardine island. Is it true. I shall be around the area from Aug 12th so may bump into you

Nat, yes the last of the restaurants have been closed. I didn't know that about non-stingy jellies in Mar Menor.

Shan't be bumping into you, tho'. Right now we are in Almerimar for a week or so, then we are heading south for the rest of the summer; Melilla, Smir, Gib and then back to Almerimar for the winter again.

It is very quiet here in Almerimar. Shops, cafés, etc. all deserted. Locals tell me they have never seen it so quiet in mid summer.

Hi David
Seems to be the norm, everywhere seems quiet. Ibiza was very quiet compared with last year lot of room to anchor. Moraira was closed for refurb Altea was dead as a doornail. Calpe was quite busy but with mostly spanish. I think the best seafood resteraunts on the costas can be found there.
Pity about Rosarios on the Island it was a great chill out day although it had got very expensive since the first one was kocked down. Rumours say they are going to build a hotel/watersport come leisure centre but I dont know how true it is.

We've been on a mooring in San Antonio for many weeks until last Saturday and there were no free moorings and the anchorage seemed pretty packed, right out to the far eastern side. But the town seemed very dead by comparison. Having said that, I had to pay quite a lot to Easy Jet for a flight into Ibiza last week, at five days notice (£80 for a single /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif). We didn't go into any of the other harbours along that coast this year, not since Torrevieja became really unpleasant about people anchoring so I just sail straight past 'em. At least in Mar Menor you can anchor safely and tender ashore easily.

Some friends of ours (bit out of funds) spent the entire winter at anchor in Mar Menor last year!! Don't know where they got the water from - we have a watermaker and use it all the time.

We anchored in San Antonio east corner opposite the little bar with the stone landing quay for a couple of nights begining July & found it quiet compared to last year. We did not even need to queue for fuel or water. Moved round to San Miguel & got on a free mooring bouy (west corner) no prob. Portinaxt was also easy to find a good spot. In fact the only place we found busy was the hippy beach at the eastern end of San Miguel the anchorage was packed. before returning to the mainland we overnighted at Cala Tarida, there were only 4 other boats in the anchorage last year it was packed
Your friend in the mar menor would it be Bob by any chance.

There was a bit of space down there, at that time which, as you say, was unusual. For some reason it was given a wide berth...Spirit of Freedom was there for some time lying to two anchors.

The friends who overwintered in Mar Menor are John and Amanda - jjboat.
