Maplin rotary tool 400 piece set bargain

Please be careful using these inferior parts, the thin discs shatter regularly and the shards will fly a fair distance and still dig themselves into wood or worse, bodies and eyes - using eye protection doesn't protect bystanders.

Gosh, have you personally had that happen with the Maplin one? I am surprised such a large company sells things that could cause such harm - surely they would have loads of personal injury claims against them.

In my H & S risk assessment do I need to consider plexiglass around my work area, and perhaps a horn to alert others before I start work?

You'd have to be mental to use a tool rotating at 37000 RPM without eye protection. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dremel

Last time I bought one of these kits it was £10. Pretty good, but the case is slightly naff. I imagine I'll use up all the disks and end up with a lot of parts I'll never use. Still good value though.

I'm with you Comrade...I've just completed an IOSH managing safely course. I think any potential user should set up a 200m exclusion zone around the work area and wear full body armour. The horn is a brilliant idea too... keep up the good work........!

You're going to need ear defenders as well then - this is getting complicated!

What silly answers to what was a genuine warning about these things shattering regularly and flying some distance and embedding in wood - yes it has happened to me and yes they were an offer item from Maplins

This has been discussed before and others have said they had experienced the same.

Worst of all are the rotary wire brushes, pieces of fine wire will fly out of them during use and believe me they are not fussy where they embed themselves.

Are there any quality cut off discs on the market for the likes of dremmel? I'm looking for one that will actually last longer than 30 seconds without breaking?

Our USA cousins seem to have them!
