manufacturer Volvo Penta 2003

Who manufactured the Volvo penta 2003 (including type of the manufacturer). I heard it could be Perkins or Peugeot.
Many thanks.

Not quite sure of the models or sizes but when Volvo stopped manufacturing their own small diesel range some while back they bought and rebadged Perkins. Perkins in turn bought the basic engine from Japan, in some cases complete, in others as a basic jobbie and marinised it themselves. This is generally the situation that applies to what they sell today. Confusing or what?

Just to clarify the 2003 is Volvo designed and made. As far as I know not used in any other application other than marine engines.

Replaced by 2030 which is Japanese Perkins.

That's what I thought Tranona but was not sure of model nos. I think in fact that the 2003 was the one with the rather thin cylinder head that was prone to distortion and cracking wasn't it? I know it was one of the 2000 series and I think the problems they had were what finally decided them to factor Perkins. Bloody spares didn't get any cheaper though!

Yes, had all sorts of problems such as poor cold starting, drive plate failures and turbo intercooler on the T models.

However, loads of them around still running OK.

Mine isn't. Not much wrong with it but the price of Volvo spares makes it uneconomical to refurbish. Going to re-engine with a Beta and am minded to use the VP as a mooring sinker. About all it's bloody good for.

1955patrick -Your engine might be more economical to you to sell off as spares, having seen how hard it is to get the genuine article and or reasonable price; I imagine that the engine is generally sound so try it at auction...........unless that was tongue in cheek re. using as a sinker!!perhaps the OP needs something!

Suggest you also consider a Nanni. Same base engine but differences in marinisation. Close call as price is almost identical but I went for a Nanni and not just because it was blue rather than red!

I have had my 2003 taken out recently. Head off, decoke, valves lapped, injectors serviced, all fuel and oil filters changed and a new lift pump and one new engine mount. £700 labour and £825 parts (incl gaskets). £200 for crainage. Fit for another 20 years.

If you have to re-engine then sell the old VP - you'd be bonkers to scrap it.
