Hi all, we are overwintering (Yacht EI 6023) in Malta and wonder how many others are doing the same.I see from another thread that Babylon11 has arrived and another Irish vessel has just hauled at Manoel island. We are afloat, so I hope the dreaded coral worm is not present in Portomaso!
Portomaso is very small so we felt very lucky to obtain a berth at all.The trip down from Rome was great and we visited a number of islands on the way and went south then from Amalfi.Entering straits of Messina was not easy with some contraflow, but by following the swordfish boats close inshore we were able to best the tide and gained the bumpy marina at Messina. Best swordfish steak ever uptown(€8.), and delicious wine too.Uncomfortable here at night , much ferry wake gets under the floating breakwater.Safe enough nevertheless. Is there another alternative port on the other side? Our jump to Valetta began from Syracuse and was completed in daylight, thankfully. A super feast was enjoyed at the Black Pearl,on the Customs Quay at Msida creek.Sleep came quickly!Any other sociable yotties please post here!

probably best to ask here rather than on the other thread - I'm guessing you are in Msida - is there any space?

How did you get your berth? Just roll up and get lucky? Book in advance? Hop from marina to marina until something permanent became available?

BTW

We left Vulcan at 1am one night and headed for Riposto, (Marina D'ell Etna), which was a 76 mile trip. Nice Marina, crappy town. Then I anchored 6 miles north at Taormina for 4 weeks, (well, 1 week back in the marina), then 3 weeks in Syracusa, and 2 nights in Porto Palo.

Cheers

Richard

Why did I think you were in Msida when the above makes it clear where you are!

I think it was the meal in the Black Pearl which threw me.

Msida Marine is difficult before November and after the Middle Sea Race which will start coming Saturday
if you want it cheap you can still anchor or hang to some buoys in Marsemxetto and pop up to PortoMaso or any other marina, weather this year seems to be particularly good for this time period
if you need anything just contact me over here

Thank you all for the contributions.David Azzopardi is the man to contact in www.portomasomarina.com. It is very small so early enquiry is advised. Also you are required to fit theDouglas Marine mooring compensators they supply.(I believe they had a bad experience with other types).Seems there is a scend in there when E storms occur.Very uncommon apparently, but keeps everybody busy when it does occur. As I intend staying for a year or two I did not mind so much paying the €370.(the s/steel thimbles splices and shackles and labour are included). As an ardent DIY'er and PBO I succumbed as I was flying out to Dublin and had not time to do the work. My old Plastimo compensators were rusty but functional, but the nylon rope I was using for warps might have given up at a bad moment!Hope to be aboard next week for a well earned break.I understand from "Sandy Ways" and "Silverado" that there is still capacity to haul at Manoel Island.Tom of Sandy Ways was impressed with the care they took of his vessel when hauling and blocking off last week.
