For really good value, try 1927 in Spinola. It's next door to the San Giljan Band Club, tends to serve Maltese food and has always been very busy when we've been. For slightly more upmarket, just up the hill from the 1927 is Peppino's, also very good but more expensive.

If you're in Mdina, then Don Mesquita is good. It's hidden away in Pjazza Mesquita. We had lunch there, not sure if it's open evenings.

At Balluta, Barracuda is very good but expensive. Right next door, Piccolo Padre does good pizza and pasta.

The Blue Elephant at the Hilton is supposed to be a very good, expensive though.

On a final note, I would give the restaurants at Portomaso a miss, nothing special and you pay a premium to overlook the marina.

Hope this helps, have a good trip.

We werent over impressed with Peppinos, and can second the recommendation to avoid paying over the odds on the marina, (Portomaso). However, it's well worth a walk around the marina to the light - a very impressive marina, in a modern kind of way..

Grand Harbour marina is also worth a look, and is somewhere where the view is worth paying the marina restaurant prices.

Ferry over to Gozo is worth a trip one day - much greener than the main island. Mdina old town worth a look, as is Valetta.

We also had a pleasant boat trip one day from Msida quay, (IIRC), with a very informative commentary.

Thanks for that Richard...It is about 5 years since we were in Malta (actually bought the boat there) and good to get an update on anything new. Looking forward with interest to inspecting the new Marina in Grand harbour!!!

Update as promised..

The 1927 was certainly worth a visit...but when you said "next door to the band club",I did not think you meant it literally!! anyway we had an excellent meal..cream of asparagus soup, lamb shanks with spuds, veg & salad and a very acceptable bottle of wine..total 39 Euros for 2.
Luckily we went early in the evening as we were heading for the cinema, because the restaurant was fully booked later & they were turning people away. Thanks for the recommendation.
We had a walk around the Portomaso Marina, mainly stinkpots, but a very impressive location.
Also went over to the new(ish) Grand harbour marina for a look around,Very well sheltered ,there was a big sea that day but very little swell coming round.A good place as far as the boats are concerned, but nothing much in the way of chandleries, services etc ,and very remote from the centre of town.
Had lunch there in the "Two and a half lemons" restaurant..not bad at all, an excellent salad & pud was E20.
Beautiful day in Gozo, warm & sunny, but surprisingly the marina there was very quiet,I had been under the impression that it was always fully booked..maybe just in summer. Good lunch in The Grapes wine bar just off the square in Victoria.
Back to work now .

Look up Mama Mia in Msida, this restaraunt is always busy booking advised, edge tables are overlooking the marina. Good reports on "Trip Advisor", Not forgetting the Busy Bee just up the road about 300 yds on thr right. Good coffee and a great selection of pasties and pastries.

Yes, but..

..too late, but others may look (actually I logged in to check on holding tanks..:D)

For one of the best steaks I have had anywhere - and that includes the Savoy Grill (a birthday present, not a pose) - try Summer Nights in Marsascala. It looks like just a steak bar (and it is), but their 'Angus' steaks are memorable. 500 grams, superbly cooked (sirloin €18). Wine not brilliant unless you pay €20/bottle.

Also, for traditional Maltese, Tal Familja in Marsascala. Great fish, and a superb winelist, reasonable €. Then for Moroccan, just along the road from Tal Familja. Something different if you like Moroccan food (but their menu is international). Lebanese and Moroccan wines, even Thai. Some of the wines from the Beka'a Valley are wonderful... € ok for cruising folk...

I love beef, and Brazil too :) . Portomaso has 'Do Brasil' if you like beef from the churrasco grill...if you can afford stinkie fuel bills then prices wil be ok for you .
