I wish the boat charter company I used in the past has not sent me an email showing their lovely new 44ft motorcats for hire because now I really want to charter one and do Mallorca!

You have to start and finish in Palma. The obvious choice would seem a round the island cruise stopping in various marinas on the way. I would have to go in August. For those that know the island is this do-able in a 44ft cat in terms of getting overnight space in the marinas? Would you have to book well in advance and stick to your plan or could you just wing it and turn up where you fancied that day and get a space?

And, no, she won't to anchoring over night, it has to be a marina!

Is a circular tour of the island a good idea or should you do the other islands?

What ever else you you do Caberera should be on your list :)
Wonderful little island, used for keeping POWs at some point.
Nice beach café and crusader castle on hill.

Many experienced people will probably give you good advice but I chartered a 40' yacht from Palma last May and motored most of the time for about 3 days (little wind). Only reached as far as Cala D'or which is in the South East of the Island.
To do a circumnavigation in a week will be a marathon unless you have a powerboat and averaging good daily speeds.

Cala D'or is lovely and well worth visiting.

I Love port of Pollensa , nice marina , great town and old town too, i think its only 10 euro's a night for visiting yachts, amazing restaurants, great beach.

lots of Brits.... downside..?

Been doing some land based exploring just this week. Alcudia is very nice with a great beach and a good marina. Visited Port Soller some days ago. A very well sheltered and very pictoresque little village with a tram to Soller. Pollenca is nice too.

Today winds have been howling from the south. The island seems to be full of nice marinad to visit so might make sense to only make loose plans and pick a sheltered side of the island in case of windy weather? Don't know if this is generally a problem in august though?

I think you will find that those prices would have been for a buoy or anchoring.
We paid about 170 euros for one night in Pollensa last June on the outside of the wall to the marina.
Still - nice place.

Here's a link to my report last year - when we started at Soller and then moved on to Alcudia (Alcudiamar) for six weeks.
BTW - there should be a report coming up in the next issue of MBY.

I think you might struggle to get a mooring in a marina in majorca in august for a boat that size without booking ahead.

Cabrera is worth a visit, it has no marina, and you need to apply for a permit just to visit, but its worth doing.

what speed will the boat cruise at? If its 10-15 knots I reckon you could get round the island in 7 days easy enough. I know a couple of people who've gone round in a day (in a ~40 foot princess).

Restricting yourself to marinas will mean you miss out on some great bays though.

Thank you Mike for the reminder. Very nice re-reading the cruise report.

Based on my experiences so far, imho Alcudia is much nicer than Pollenca. It's nice (but empty) now but I can imagine there being a nice buzz in the summer.

No problem getting around Majorca in 1 week but you'd definitely have to book marinas ahead in August especially with a wide beamed cat. A reasonable itinerary might be something like this.

Palma-Andraitx-Soller-Alcudia-Porto Colom-Cala d'Or-Palma or other way round of course.

There are plenty of lunchtime anchorages between these ports. Ibiza would be a no-no in August because you'd be very unlikely to get a marina berth and it would cost an arm and leg so anchoring overnight is virtually unavoidable. One other possibility would be to go Palma-Soller-Alcudia-Mahon(Menorca)-Cala d'Or-Palma but that might be a bit of a schlap for just 1 week and it also leaves you potentially exposed to weather delay. Be aware that the north coast of Majorca and Menorca generally are a bit windier than the south of Majorca and more exposed to the northerly mistral wind if it blows up.
Generally I think a circumnavigation of Majorca would be a viable and enjoyable 1 week trip providing of course you can get the marina spaces booked in advance. Your charter company may be able to help with this. If you do decide to do it, I can give you a few suggestions for lunchtime anchorages

Not been there ---- yet
I want to get there this summer

Climb up to the fort. You can get right to the top of the keep .V.narrow staircase goes clockwise ? or something. This was to enable the the defenders to use their right (sword arm) while putting any attackers trying to come up the staircase at a disadvantage.

Also very lovely walk all the way round the bay and over the the rise into the next bay and then to the lighthouse - about 6 miles round trip and amazing scenery and flora/fauna. Best in Spring but also fine in the summer if you make an early start to avoid main heat of the day. As you probably know you can now book online and pick the buoy you want although it costs around €40 - but at least that means there's usually availability!

Do before high season if you can. Start in Cabrera then go northeastward along the coast. Alcudia to Soller then Andratx are both longish leg and no real secure harbour if The weather does not cooperate.

Cabrera is a must .... Enjoy

Will be a lovely holiday but a cat needs 2x berths side by side which will be quite a mission. You'll definitely need to book and some places won't accept bookings. I would abandon the idea of full circumnav in a 15kt boat. Too much time underway; the most fun will be while you're stopped. Just do Palma to alcudia then pay a skipper to drive the boat back to Palma and fly home

Which model Fairline is she - guessing T40 / T43?
She is a fabulous looking boat in this setting.
Sorry for thread drift ;)

Mike, on the one hand you say that marina bookings need to be made, and on the other that weather may be an issue. I presume if you've made a booking in peak season you'll have to pay regardless, and secondly you may be turfed out of where you are even if you can't go on to the next destination cos of the weather as others have already booked the space you're in.

Not knowing Med weather, is it that reliable in August that the above scenario is irrelevant? Also from what you've written in the past, aren't lots of the August visitor prices very high, more so for a cat?
