Thinking to go from early June, Palma Mallorca to Spanish mainland with stops and then to Gib and then to Canaries by end June.
Comments on timing -ports-marinas pls?
Ordered pilot book for Spain/Gib - in transit-but comments pls on marinas to stop in SE Spain and Gib? Dont mind paying for good stops.
Previously some comments on Canaries but any extras as have to leave 46' yacht in Canaries for July and Aug to return to Australia.Return Canaries end Aug.
Will then most likely do ARC to St Lucia in Nov.
Love to hear comments on that one?

Alicante is a proper med city, some nice restaurants and one or two really fab ones.

From there, use this list of other noteworthy and picturesque places worth stopping off at on the way to Gib.

. Also, Gib a bit of a dump as well but nice from about two miles away.

Cartagena

yep.

Though cartagena just a little way down from alicante has a big natural port and nice clubhouse. So, i'm being horrid. But lots of the places are a just sunny rather than actually actively picturesque.

Cartgena also has a quite fab newish museum of the civil war - cartagena was amongst the first evr cities to be bombed, to stop shipping.

Re: Cartagena

Don't miss Morocco! For me, it was the best part of the trip. Though a stop in Cartagena was nice (busy town) and Gib interesting and not to be missed if in the area anyway.

I think the guys have given that bit of coast a worse press than it deserves - all Spanish marinas are pretty good - well run and better facilities at half the price of UK marinas.

Cartagena, Alicante are as described - good places big towns/cities with marinas in the centre of them. Puerto Banus is the luxury place on the coast and fun for a visit - I like Fuiengeroller (spelling) because it is so 'up front' and brash, with pubs and too many English villains, but none the less is worth a stop.. as is Velez Malaga with odd little v Spanish bars and restaurants for working people, lots of dust and dirt but not touristy... Benelmadena on the other hand is a beautifully designed marina far from the town... Almirima is a good place to lay up the boat but miles from the town as well but has all the facilities. But if you hire a car you can visit the Clint Eastwood - spaghetti western towns up in the hills. Well done and the old film sets look authentic -
Personally I love Gib - great character - go and see the cave concert hall and the gun emplacements up in the cave - I think its now possible to tour all the underground roads that house the Royal Navy except the bit where subs enter undersea and where the nuke warheads are stored. You can get most Pilot Books from the little bookshop on the corner near the governor's house.

Do not forget the canaries only reason d'etre is as a holiday resort - there are German islands Dutch islands Brit islands but they are all all holiday resorts and pretty naff.. Gomera is partly ok as is Las Palmas but that's it,

What on earth do you want to do the ARC for. If you have sailed up from OZ then you can do the Atlantic - all down wind and with the SSB and Herb you will never be alone. The ARC is two very expensive parties in overcrowded anchorages..
regards

Michael

Have to disagree with MichaelE about the ARC. It's far from perfect (the main problem being that it takes place generally before the Trades have settled in) but it's nearer 10 parties at each end (if my fuzzy memory serves me correctly!), lots of technical reps from companies able to fix stuff/give advice before the start, a reassuring third party safety inspection, good website to post logs, SSB net and a great atmosphere as you set off and arrive. After crossing the Atlantic, arriving to a welcoming steel band and a iced rum punch on the pontoon makes it rather special. Enjoy it!

Thanks to all for info;
Some + some Negs, but we will still do the SE Spain. I have really liked the Spanish people-some times the Siesta gets me when I need something fixed, but I am learning to like it! Nat did you mean San Pedro del Pinatar?
Michael and others thanks- we did not sail from OZ but bought the Contest 46' in Mallorca and spent last season in the Balearics. Liked a lot but the crowds and cost of marinas as we will have to leave the boat for july and August is expensive for us.So we will move on. Always lots of info on the forums!
Thanks
Warren

Yes San Pedro del pinator, very clean quiet marina but at the moment lots of industrial units going up at the commercial end. Mar Menor next door is free & quite a few peeps anchor there foc. Water ect available at Tomas Maestrow & off season its rare to be charged overnight on the visitors berth.
