Hi All,

I've just sorted a 3-4 day Mobo charter in Mallorca for the last weekend of August/first few days of September.

We're out of Cala D'Or and was after a little help in terms of where we could go, what to do etc. Ideally would like some advice on anchorages, over-night places, restos, bars etc - all the secret stuff you guys probably know about! Boat is a Targa 47 with small tender and there will be 4 adults.

I'll get some charts/books etc but any advice gratefully appreciated including if there are any strange currents/winds and obviously a weather prediction!

Also looking through other threads on here.

Thanks!

Mat

Head to cabrera for an overnight stop, you'll need to booking mooring bouy via a website i cant remember, can dig it out later.

Yep definitely one night Cabrera. You book online 20 days before. Googlable. 20nm

The calas to the w are nicer than to the east imho. Google image Mondrago and Santanyi. Es Trenc (15 miles west, then turn up heading NW and its one of the first beaches) is very nice. If you plan higher mileages then please shout, but I don't see the point in racking up high miles in t47 for 3 days only. Cala dor itself is very nice indeed. Port Petit restaurant. If you did fancy a long run then you could do a day or 2 on the south/west coast beaches of Menorca. 50 miles each way from CD. At the other extreme, the little cala gran on your left just as you are about to exit cala dor for the open sea is very nice -that's 1 mile from your berth - see those recent jon mendez videos. I'm there for 3 weeks starting next Wednesday

Thanks Julians/JFM - will have a bit of a google around. Short distances are just fine. Don't fancy massive mileage, more a bit of a blat and anchor/swim/chill type affair a couple of times before dins and bed.

I fear this may end up (finally) in a "moving to the med" thread..

Have a look at past issues of MBY
We based ourselves last summer in that area ans I wrote up a bit for MBY on Cabrera (Jan 15 or Feb 15 issue - I think - Our Boats Section)

Last year, booking Cabrera was difficult - this was the web address:-
https://www.reservasparquesnacional...html/detalle-actividad-oapn.aspx?cen=26&act=1
Then click on
Archipiélago de Cabrera
Then click
Fondeo
Then click
Pulsar en este enlace

It may have changed this year though.

As said above, Es Trenc (Rapita) or Jordi is a good place to start and if you just want a day out, Cala Mondrago can be good.

Try these - As far as the Baldricks are concerned, there is nothing more detailed

You can get them on Amazon
Mallorca one here

Menorca one here

Ibiza one here

Definitely the best info on all the islands.

Porto Petro is only a couple of miles south of Cala Dor and is a great place to pick up a buoy for the night. Very sheltered but the buoys are far enough away from the land to give real peace and quiet.

Go ashore to the stunning little restaurants that set up on the boat launching ramp every evening. See here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portopetro

Well worth one night, we spent about 5 nights there last year.

Hi matm,

Presume the boat that you are chartering is the Essex Boatyards one below the Fairline offices.

We are berthed in Cala d'Or opposite the Fairline offices on berth N9 (Boat name Acuarela)

3-4 days is not long so I would suggest the following;
1) Book 1 night at Cabrera on the 20m buoys.
2) Spend a day at Es Trenc. Clear blue water and beach bar etc.
3) On the first day just go round the corner to Mondrago. (Recover from the flight)

Places to eat abound in Cala d'Or but we prefer:
1) Port Petit ( Top end but well worth the expense)
2) Yacht Club Cala 'dOr
3) Noa for Chinese
3) La Table, new small French owned eatery that is gaining a good reputation.
4) La Pampa. Argentinian steak house that has just opened and is getting good reviews. Cannot confirm as I am a veggie.

The rest vary in quality and price but are all ok depending on your taste.

You do not need detailed charts as the waters are very deep even close to the shore and your plotter will give you all the info you need, just get a chart covering the East coast area.

I hope to be out on the boat at the time of your visit so if you need any help just ask.

If you fancy using a skipper for one or two days I suggest you contact Mike at Sea Teach whose offices are opposite the boat who could show you all the local Cala's and would give you a relaxing time.

tee hee hee! Didn't we have that conversation a couple of years ago?:encouragement:

Erm. Yep, guilty as charged :-). TBH I'm so excited about this that a) I'll end up chatting up Nick a bit more for a longer charter and b) I'm looking at A/C and trucks already. I'm doomed! If I hadn't spent more time in the US than at home for the last 18months, would've been done already.

So in summary, there's lots of nice places, no wind, sunny and lots of decent places to eat. Struggling and SWMBO is not helping - "do it".

Thanks Doug, really appreciated. Yep, it's the EBY boat. Will be sure to say "hi". I've got a T44 in the Solent so part of the fun for us will be bareboat. Just looking at hotels for before and after as we'll have a "mini-break" either side. Recommendations always appreciated. Thought about somewhere in/near Cala D'Or beforehand then who knows where afterwards. We don't spend a lot of time on hols in Europe so really looking forward to it.

Thanks Graham / Mike. Bought the Sport Boat book on Amazon yesterday. The couple we are going with have been on a few trips with us already x-channel etc so part of the fun is dinner and planning (wine..)

Given some of these recommendations, I'm going to have a serious problem with only 3 and a bit days...

Oh can I put in for your hammerhead at PS then :)

H,mm......Heavens forbid if course if by some amazing and extremely rare chance the only windy day that happens in Cala d Or decides to blow while you are there. A hire car will get you to to some really nice places to visit especially on the north coast of the island. :)
The house where Chopin stayed is well worth avisit.

Not the best person to advise on hotels as we do not use them so can only offer the following:

1) Fowlers. In Cala d,Or just up from the marina. A real quirky but friendly small hotel very popular with berth holders for their cocktails. Rooms basic but very clean. We like the hotel but you may have trouble getting in.
2) Hotel Cala d'Or. In the main town right on the beach. Very popular family hotel.
3) Robinson Club, Cala Serena. Short car ride from the marina and is a German owned hotel complex. We like it a great deal and it is worth contemplating.
4) Puravida Resort Blau, Porto Petro. Large hotel complex that gets mixed reports.

If your all up for something different I would go for Fowlers, but be sure to book early.

Just had another thought about another quirky hotel right in the middle of old town Palma.

Hotel Palacio Ca Sa Galesa. Claims to be an old palace, but I guess palaces were small in the old times.

My wife loves the place but then again she is also 'quirky' in a really nice way.

Have a look on Tripadvisor first.

So Day #1 not going so well. Provisioned the boat last night and did hand over as there was no-one else chartering it.

Get to the boat this morning, slight breeze, all looking ok.

On the way past the fuel dock in Cala D'Or, incoming boats shouts across "very rough". We get out of the marina, into the first bay and we can see it's blowing harder and a decent size swell up ahead. We go about 3/4 mile out and it's 1m+ short swell. Boat is getting very wet and so are some of the crew... Not happy campers. So we turn round and head back to Cala D'Or for the day :-(

Tomorrow doesn't look that great either and we're booked into Cabrera. Wind is blowing NE/E again.

Anywhere more sheltered? Should we be going east out of Cala D'Or? Colom etc?

Colom is not far, sheltered inside, either pick up a buoy or marina, not much in town really.

When the wind blows from the north across the bay of Lyon it normally blows for a few days, and as you say rough seas. We keep our boat in alcudia bay and get the brunt of it. Hope it calms down soon back on Thursday.

If the weather is still a bit iffy and you can make it East Cala rajada or Porto crisis check spelling is nice, both moll transit so cheap mooring . Cala rajada is easy parking along the quay, down side it's a German holiday destination.
