Half term is going to be great weather so we're planning a week on the Blackwater riviera. We fancy a night in historic Maldon but had heard that access is getting difficult, we draw 4'6" and have a long keel profile, any tips for overnighting in Maldon?

I'd berth in Heybridge basin - much prettier and you won't dry out. Not too long a walk into town... or take the tender up the river into the quay.

Also take the tender up the Navigation to Tesco's for supplies...

+1, one of our favourite spots on the East Coast. Last year the canal was very choked with weed in the last mile up to Tesco's though.

The canal or long pond as it is known by Madournites is now clear of all weed.. The river is in full spate..

Not seen the fancy pontoon on the town quay recently but it is probably silted up so you will need a good tide on and off.. also heed the comment about the barges... They do slip sideways as they settle... There is a marina behind the Marinestore and also Downs road..

You'll sit in the mud - the town quay pontoon has silted up. A bargeman told me not to raft up on a Thames barge as they slide outward as they settle and will push you over

That's interesting to know - thanks.

I dried out against the wall a few year's back without problems. It was not a quiet Saturday night .

I draw 4' 6" and only just managed to get off on a neapish tide.
