The old boards have gone a bit wavey and the headlining (not foam backed) is a sorry sight so I'm going to make new boards and recover them. Hawkehouse web refers to 6mm ply. Just ordinary ply would be good enough wouldn't it? The boat is dry inside and the fixing battens are just softwood.

I shall use their recommended glue and replace the old brass screws with stainless.

Anything else I should worry about?

Just redone my camper roof. I used 4mm ply with an ash veneer on the face. £20 for an 8x4.
The ply had quite a bit more flex than the 6mm that I considered and the veneer looks good so no need to use head lining.
Good luck

That sounds v interesting.
Where did you get the veneer, and what sort of price does it cost?
Thanks.

Use exterior ply...halfway house between packing crate ply and marine...but a lot cheaper than marine. At least if you do get a leak somewhere it will survive.

I'd recommend HH's foam backed vinyl, and glue it to the wood with PVA. It's also an excellent opportunity to add some LED downlighters...I've done all of the above and it has totally transformed my saloon.

I would have thought that you could use some kind of plastic flexible sheet - and at least it wouldn't rot. I think that 6mm is might be too thick. If you send a pm to Clyde_Wanderer he could give you some advice - he has done a similar job on his boat and very nice it looks too.

4mm will go wavy again, 6mm probably won't. On a roof with a heavy curve 4mm is Ok as it is stiffened by the curve.
Most builders merchants supply faced exterior ply - We get ours from RGB who also offer one of the best general exterior plys currently available.

What/where is HH foam backed??

For more cost effective alternative to Hawke House you could try Porter Forster in Essex. I used unbacked Vinyl for my roof panels. I didn't use ply. I used 4 mm foamex. Its a lot more resistant to damp/moisture than ply and won't warp.

I got the gloss and used that to face the heads compartment so its easier to clean. The joins were sealed up with bathroom silicon. Looks very "Factory" rather than hashed up DIY

I can honestly say that using foam backed has made a massive difference to the insulation/warmth on board this winter!

Use grooved ply for headlining

I found a 6mm lightweight grooved marine ply at Robbins Timber for under £100 sheet for 8ft x 4ft which is cheaper than foamex etc. Its durable, light, and its grooved to look just like tongue and groove. Grooves are at 60mm spaces, PERFECT for that vintage marine look. Can be painted or varnished. I think its called Elite panelling. Not sure how well it bends though, if you have to follow a curved surface. www.robbins.co.uk
