Dont normally post in here... but i know lots of you keep your boats in the area.

I off on a friends boat soon and been looking last week at port solent at charts and pilot books for the area.

Imray and admirality dont seem to do too many chart for the island just one big passage chart. I was hoping for something with smaller detail for pilotage. is the imray pilot sufficient for this, with a chart plotter ?

Or what do you find helpfull.

The admiralty charts are very good for the islands, dont know where you got the idea they arent. With some very large scale charts of all the harbours etc. A pilot book would be a great asset. I would get the RCC foundation pilot book, great! Or the french one.

I use the French Navicarte charts which are larger scale than the Imray M3 chart. Can't compare them with Admiralty charts as i have never seen them.

Where will you be cruising? To cover the whole of Mallorca you need two charts - one covers North and East Mallorca and Menorca and the other South & West Mallorca, Cabrera and Ibiza. Most major harbours & marina's are shown in detail. They are readily available in most chandlers on the island about €20 each

The Imray Pilot book has just been updated with lots of new pics and is generally a good reference but take with a pinch of salt some of their instructions for securing visitor berths in marina's - they seem to forget they are dealing with the Spanish :)

Thanks

imray M3 i thought was rather a passage chart the admirality is a similar chart size.

I will wait till i can get a French Navicarte. Cruising area will mainly be north of the island. The new imray pilot looks good.

Do you have any fav places to visit and chill out ?

Which marina will you be based in - Pollensa, Alcudia? you really are spoilt for choice of great cruising and anchorages all over the Balearics so it's best to try and narrow it down.

Mine are on the boat, but I guess there must be an admiralty website with a catalogue? I use all admiralty charts of the islands. I can when I return to Barca send the numbers to you, but you'll have to remind me, best way is to send me a pm, then I'll remember!

For pilot books the cheapest and best is the French Bloc Marine - Mediterranean it's only €21 and gives lots of safety information also....oh yes it's in English as well as French. There is a Spanish Bloc Marine but I'm not sure if it gives any greater detail than the Med version

I've not found any large scale charts of the Balearics which I would say are suitable for close quarters pilotage. I have found a chart folio in a local chandlery for the Balearics similar to an Admiralty chart folio. Sorry, can't remember the publisher but it's really only suitable for passage planning anyway except for a few major ports. I have the Bloc book on board but it's a bit large and unwieldy. I've found the best pilot book to be the Islas Baleares pilot revised by Hammick and published by Imray and I use this a lot for pilotage in conjunction with C Map cartography on the plotter. Be aware though that I've found the C Map cartography to be have quite serious errors and omissions and I would'nt rely on the plotter alone for pilotage

If you are in Peuerto de Colonia de San Pedro (phew) http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=39.737289&lon=3.272074&z=17.1&r=0&src=ggl in Alcudia bay, then thats a nice place to stop over. We pop across from Alcudia for lunch there sometimes. I think the bay is around 12 miles wide, so it takes a bit to get from end to the other. My favourite place just north of you is Cala es Calo http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=39.773826&lon=3.333763&z=17.8&r=0&src=ggl nice in anything bar a NE wind. Careful of lots of big rocks, depth is fine but you can foul the anchor unless you look before you drop. Busy at weekends. Also Alcanada is another foolproof place to stop, sheletered by a little island http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=39.83363&lon=3.168454&z=16&r=0&src=ggl you can take a dinghy ashore and there is a great resturant or get some papers and bread. Also playa de coll baix has some of the best anchoring that side of teh island, with fab blue seas, but not in a N or NW wind. Cala Murta in Pollensa Bay is great, you can moor overnight in Pollensa by the pta de la avanzada, so many great places. One other place in a wind free and swell free day is Cala de font salada just up and round the point from you. Fantastic spot but suffers from swell so you need a calm day. http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=39.76559&lon=3.378662&z=17.7&r=0&src=ggl

Lots of info, but so many places, you will have a great time.
